More Americans are following the lead of President and Michelle Obama when it comes to naming their daughters, the Social Security Administration said Friday.
"Maliyah," a version of the name "Malia" that the president and first lady gave their oldest daughter, made the biggest jump in popularity among girls names in 2009, moving 342 spots up to No. 296.
The name "Malia" moved up 153 spots to No. 192.
Meanwhile, "Sasha," the name of the Obamas' younger daughter, came in at No. 261 - having moved up 101 spots.
There was no bounce for the first lady: The name "Michelle" actually dropped one spot to No. 104.(continued)

Family names “suck”. I hate the fact that people think that we should have family names or they impose their name crap on us. I have 6 daughters and 1 son. I decided early on that there would be no real family influence on first names. There are a couple with middle names but I minimize that.
I have the most anonymous name on the planet and I don’t particularly care for it. People confuse me for my father and I often have to field calls for him from jilted lovers.
If you leave your son with a particular name you Better make it a good one.
Michaelee is a girl’s name & I didn’t mind naming my daughter for my sister. We call her Sassy anyway.

Oh, my very fav cre8tive name, for those OH SO SPAYSHUL chid-ren is: Vaginal. No, I’m not kidding. There was a woman reporter for the Pasadena, CA paper named Vaginal Davis. 2nd runner up is Female. With an accent over the e. Fe mah lay. The mother said she got it from the bracelet they put on the bebe. Unreal.
That said, Sasha is not a rotten name. Mahlia borders on dumb.
