"Common Sense Conservative" is the new "Compassionate Conservative"?

Conservative does not need any qualifiers to make it sound more enlightened. If you are going to use one, the classic "rock-ribbed" is what it should be. Of course, those folks are few and far between, it appears.

I hate the phrase “common sense” as it is used in modern political discourse. Assumes you are right without bothering to prove anything. Palin uses it alot. I cringe when I hear it.
When I hear the phrase I start listening very carefully because usually it is a cover for some kind of demagoguery.

I guess they say it, because if a person has to ask them what they are talking about then you might look like you don’t have any common sense. LOL

I don’t think that “Common Sense Conservative” means the same thing as “Compassionate Conservative”.
So if you mean “new” as in “replacement for”, maybe so, but if you mean “new” as in “equivalent to”, not so much.
For what it’s worth, I seem to remember Sarah explaining what the difference was between a plain old conservative, and a “common sense” conservative, in her book. Maybe someone who has memorised it could enlighten us further.

Well whatever it is, it seems to be the new buzzword. I’m always skeptical of buzzwords.

Barry uses it a lot to as in
We need common sense gun regulations.
“Let’s meet our responsibility to the citizens who sent us here. Let’s try common sense.
“In the coming weeks, the President will continue to work closely with Chairman Dodd and others to craft a strong, comprehensive financial reform bill that puts in place common sense rules of the road and robust safeguards for the benefit of consumers, closes loopholes, and ends the mentality of Too Big to Fail.

If you ask me, rock-ribbery beats McRibbery any day of the week (and twice on Sunday)!

Conservative does not need any qualifiers to make it sound more enlightened.Actually, this is needed.
So many conservatives said they were "revolutionaries" -- Reagan Revolution, Gingrich Revolution -- back in the Eighties and Nineties that it scared people.
"Common sense reform" is more accurate and doesn't give voters who aren't ideologically committed the heebie-jeebies in that way.

As with "compassionate conservative" you're not the audience for "common sense conservative." It's aimed at swing voters.
I don't think it's going to cause the same trouble with the "rock-ribbed" as compassionate conservatism did. Everybody knows there are practical and impractical people in both parties. And identifying oneself with commonsense never hurt a politician.

Eric Cantor, U.S. Congressman from Virginia
A youthful 46, Cantor is routinely and accurately - described as a rising star, becoming Minority Whip a year ago after eight years in the House of Representatives. The only Jewish Republican in Congress, he advocates a strong US-Israeli alliance and led a Republican congressional delegation to the Middle East in August to rouse support for Israeli settlements that he felt the White House overlooked.
Although a strong conservative across the board, he aims to help return the Republicans to power by becoming less ideologically focused on social issues and more concerned with economical issues. He believes 60 per cent of America is with us in believing in a Main Street, common-sense conservatism" but that Republicans struggle to connect with voters for reasons of image.
During his first year as Whip showed no qualms about taking on liberal big beasts such as Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank, excoriating them for politicising the first bailout bill. He regularly consults Newt Gingrich for inspiration about how the party can repeat his success of 1994 but it will be up to Cantor and his colleagues to produce eye-catching policy ideas if they really want to capitalise on disenchantment with the Democrats.
