Politics is really depressing me...

Posted on 05/12/2010 1:01:07 AM PDT by se_ohio_young_conservative

Does anyone else have this problem ? I think I need a break.

I thought this was going to be the year we took back congress and things were going to get better. I just don't feel the positive momentum anymore. Sometimes I fear our fate is sealed as a country. I pray something changes.

Obama pushed healthcare through. I felt like we were united against it. And he still pushed it through. I don't know if we fell short or he simply outlasted us. I just want something to go our way. I wake up on some mornings and wonder if we will have a country left in a few years.

The attacks on Sarah Palin by conservatives (some of whom I respect) have really been cutting me up inside. And I think it is hurting us nationally. To me she represented a bright future for this country. And it seems like she is being destroyed from the left and right now. From all directions. And it is a helpless feeling knowing there is nothing that can be done to stop it.

It is like there is nothing to be excited about now..

Maybe I just need more breaks from politics and news watching. But reality is harsh right now.

Cheer up FRiend! I always enjoy reading your posts. Don’t let those idiot Palin bashers get you down. Most of them are left wing trolls anyhow. They spent countless hours trying to convince anyone they could to stay at home or vote thrid party when in came down to McCain or Obama. They did the same when it was Bush vs. Gore and Bush vs. Kerry. They’ll do the same in the next election. They’re actually pretty insignificant. What isn’t significant though is the rise of the tea parties and Obama/Pelosi/Reid’s plummeting approval ratings. There’s nothing they can do about that, so they spend all their time trying to tear down whomever they consider the biggest threat to Obama and his leftist minions. Sarah scares them, and their fear turns to hate.

It is like there is nothing to be excited about now..

It is a long hard fight. For starters, you do this because you are concerned. A good many in the political game do it because it pays them money. While to them it is a full time job, for you it is like having a second job that does not pay but demands intense effort and energy.

Ok to feel down and like it is an impossible fight once in a while. Just remember it is only a tough one.

Here is how you change the odds. At election time, you are not just one vote. You are as many people as you can convince to vote and vote they way you would like them to vote. You alone are never more effective than an organized local group. Start one or find one and get involved.

We live in an age of misinformation and unreason. The government is in control of our schools and our media, which in turn is controlled by the Democrat party, long since taken over by the communists. We are running out of time to turn this around.

Keep in mind that we are in a relay, not a sprint. We still have a few months to go; it’s going to get very intense in a couple of months. Pace yourself!

I do find politics depressing. And sometimes I stand back and read less of it. I have a spiritual faith and turn to dwell there more deeply to restore myself.
I also find it encouraging to look at those who stand up to the decaying world, against the odds.
When I feel most overwhelmed, I recall the photograph of Tienanmen Square and that one young man standing in front of the tank.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Man
I marvel at the way he darted in front of it every time the tank tried to move past him.
The battle that Ezra Levine waged with the Human Rights Commission in Canada. The Swedish artist who stood up against extremists by publishing cartoons in the face of death threats. The firemen raising the flag over the remains of the Twin Towers. The list goes on. When I see others facing the enemy (foreign or political), I am hesitant to turn away in hopelessness myself. It’s as if I fear that those brave souls will have no one ‘watching their back’ for them, no one supporting their valorous deeds.
I really do believe I understand - it genuinely is overwhelming sometimes when it isn’t crushingly disappointing. I sometimes take a little break, then I turn back again.

The nonsense Palin has been subjected to has been very unfair, but this is how politics has always been - Ronald Reagan is a legend now but in the summer and fall of 1980 he was denounced as a radical and a dunce, while moderate Republicans were urged to vote for some non-entity named John Anderson. There's plenty that can be done to stop the attacks on Palin, most of it by Palin herself - Reagan showed how it's done.

But at the end of the day, it's got to be about conservative principles, not personalities. I like and admire Palin, and I'm rooting for her to become the conservative standard-bearer. But I'm not at all swayed by her endorsement of Carly Fiorina - my vote will be cast for Chuck DeVore.

If he were president today
The cable news commentators would be on his case about
His awful haircut
His gaunt face
His crooked tie
His trembling hands
His mole
His depression
His wide lapels
His lanky frame
His crazy wife
His Marfan Syndrome
His overuse of humor
And his plans to spend time relaxing at the theatre instead of doing the job he was elected to do

(Abraham Lincoln)
This text was found at: http://punditkitchen.com/2009/09/09/political-pictures-abraham-lincoln-president-today/

From that same page, the following comment: Actually Lincoln was lambasted at every turn, he was a VERY unpopular president in his era. ... British papers referred to him as “the Ape.”

From your screen name, I will assume that you are still young man or women; don’t let the negativity and swings of momentum sink in. “Like water off a duck’s back” - have you ever heard that phrase? We do what we can, when we can. The corrupt system we are fighting is monstrous, but still within the collective will of the citizens of the United States to control. More and more people are re-awakening to their political responsibilities as FRee citizens of these 57 States; we shall prevail - for there is no other choice left to us.

Hang in there, it's waaaay too early to get depressed and let it truly affect you in a defeatist way.

Think George Washington and hanging on through a bitter couple of years of nothing but defeats with little hope of any change. Or Wilberforce through decades of defeats as he came against slavery.

They prevailed though faith in their mission (and the One who gave the mission), in spite of what appeared as failure, and accomplished things way beyond what they saw or hoped for in the end.

Don't let the negative waves of FR trolls bother you, it's a long fight.

Cheer up. Most people in this population are spectators, sports fans, and cheerleaders; not strategists.

An even uglier analogy would be the first wave of an amphib invasion, where the guys can't wait to get ashore and kick some butt. The guys in the second wave are a little more grim. So are the old farts who have read some history.

How I try - maybe unsuccessfully - to stay sane. Keep balanced. Mix up your passion for politics with other more joyful pursuits; listening to music, reading books [the Bible], going to the gym, etc. Try to stay away from Pop Culture, TV, Newspapers, it will only make you depressed.

Sarah Palin is a true American gem, and heroine.

Follow her example by hitting back twice as hard when attacked. Further, I’d suggest your reexamine your “respect” for those who’ve attacked her - they’ve shown their true colors.

My advice: cut back for a while. Set a goal — how many days a week? Some people study politics ONCE a week. That’s still being involved, just less often.

Being depressed and exposing yourself to a constant stream will make you ineffective. You need to come back an energized person who people enjoy “hearing” from.

Others study it three times a week. Make at least three days a week politics-free as much as possible. You might put on the radio while keeping busy doing other things, but ABSTAIN for a while. Don’t burn out. That’s the worst thing you could do.

And it wouldn’t hurt to take a break immediately — from now until Monday.

Here in SW Ohio my remedy for political depression is taking a break from the Glenn Beck Show. Instead of watching it 5 days a week only watch it 2 or 3 times.

Reagan was my CIC and I loved him. I do remember the drumbeat back then was how “dumb” he was. That is the typical chant of the left: “We are brilliant - everyone else is dumb!” I will say that the attacks on Reagan actually seem tame compared to the attacks on Sarah Palin, however.

Perfectly understandable, and yes, if you need a break, by all means take one and feel welcome whenever you decide it's time to come back.

Sometimes we need to recharge. The objective of the enemy is to wear us all down to compliance. Taking a breath prior to the primary battles and November elections is a good idea.

You'll know if there's an issue demanding your immediate attention.

Take some time to get in touch with the things that make your life meaningful. God, family, friends, etc.

Good luck.

We are all worried for the future of the country. Think 2010. Worry about that for the moment. If the GOP wins big in November, they better not resort to the passiveness they have always exhibited in the past. If they do, the story of 2012 will be sadly written.

One battle at a time. Quit taking opposing views so seriously. They are good for candidates. Makes them work harder to get it right.

If a person wants to be President, they can’t be a petty little piker like Obozo and whine at the criticism.

Sorry you feel that way, kid.

Here's a tip: Do not, repeat, DO NOT expect one political person to "save" you. I don't care who it is that you pin all your hopes to, you will always be disappointed.

As for your angst re: Mrs Palin. Buck up. She is a big girl and can take care of herself. If she cannot, she does not belong in politics.

IMHO, she brings much of the criticism upon her self with her stupid publicity stunts (eg-the writing on the hand, taking the magic marker to the "McCain" hat, the frequent thin-skinned shove backs at has-been comedians, etc., etc., etc.) Yes, it keeps her in the news, but makes her look like an idiot. Whether this is entirely her own doing, or the result of poor advice from substandard advisors, remains to be seen.

Best wishes to you!
