Toy Gun Sold in U.S. Can Easily be Converted to the Real Thing

“The airsoft can be converted to an AR-15,” firearms manufacturer Leo Gonnuscio told FoxNews.com after testing the make and model of airsoft guns seized by the ATF.

Having concluded that several other airsoft guns could not be converted to fire real ammunition, Gonnuscio said he was surprised to find that he was able to to transform this particular gun to the real thing -- and with “minimal work,” because its bottom half, or “receiver,” is so similar to an AR-15's.

To make the airsoft receiver function just like an AR-15’s, Gonnuscio said, “All you have to do is drill one hole.”

Getting a "receiver to function" and getting a device to complete a full firing cycle more than once on a single trigger pull are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

A gun works well because it has a multiplicity of processes melded together for that purpose. A single process doesn't turn a chunk of plastic into a machinegun.

I've heard of people making a bomb out of a roll of toilet paper and a stick of dynamite.

McGyver could make a bomb out of a paper clip and a chewing gum wrapper.

ZIP Guns are real.

BTW, you can stick together a bunch of shotgun shells and make them go off like a bomb ~ one almost got me years back ~ idiot mailed it to his wife's boyfriend ~ and it "went off" kinda'.

These deals aren't perfect.

I wouldn't use a shotgun shell ZIP Gun because of the inherent unreliability of getting a good ignition outside of the cleverly designed shotgun systems currently available on the open market.

It may be possible to attach a REAL AR15 upper to this toy trigger group and make it fire, but I wouldn’t want to be the crash-test dummy who fires it. The barrel and bolt are contained by the (real) upper receiver, and the lower receiver (the toy part) has only the trigger assembly and magazine holder. I haven’t seen an Airsoft AR15, but if this story is true, it was pretty stupid of the manufacturer to make parts that would fit on a real gun.

The real problem is that the M16/AR15 receiver (the part that the ATF considers the actual “gun”) is a 2 part assembly, top and bottom, and the top part doesn’t have a serial number and can be purchased by anybody because it’s not considered the “gun”.

Good to know if I ever get locked up in a HobbyTown.

happened to me once. I built a JDAM from some D engines and some RC plane parts and blew the door down.

You would have thought a Janet Reno dance party started.

There is a difference between .308 and 7.62x51 NATO. I learned that the hard way in my Remington bolt action "Police" rifle. The throat is narrower in that rifle. .308 only. The NATO round slam fired. Fortunately, I had the muzzle pointed downrange when I was closing the bolt. Lots of gas in my face and unanticipated recoil. The good deal I got on the NATO ammo wasn't so good after all. I paid too much for the rifle to risk damaging it or being injured by the wrong ammo. C'est la vie.

I only shoot commercial .223 in my Savage bolt actions as well. The real AR15 is fine with NATO or .223.

This is highly misleading. Anyone can already buy a stripped lower receiver without going through a FFL and assembling an AR.

They are just using this to try and regulate and suppress a perfectly legal activity. An citizenry armed with weapons that they don't know about scares the hell out of them.

I can convert a hammer and a pipe of the appropriate dimensions into a “firearm” ... In fact, I could make an awesome “shotgun” using nothing more than a pipe and hammer ...

Of course, I will be requiring serious medical attention after firing it ...

Of course they don't consider the upper receiver "the gun"; it's just part with the chamber, firing pin and barrel. The untrained, casual civilian firearms owner mistakenly thinks that the muzzle is the dangerous end of such weapons. Fortunately for our society, we have a federal bureaucracy to protect us by regulating and serializing the really dangerous part, the section where you put your finger to pull the trigger. Morons. /sarc

Little confused about what happened here. Did the firing pin release as you were engaging the bolt and before it was fully locked up?

LOL! BTTT!

Luckily, I spent almost ten years in the Marine Corps and learned that the barrel end of the gun thingy is the dangerous end! Best part, it only took me almost ten years! /s

Rule #4. Ready, Fire, Aim equals FAIL.

I can make a zip gun in about 30 minutes.

Would I fire it? Not unless there was no other option.

Would I fire a metal upper receiver mated to a toy lower receiver? It's illegal.

Since the lower receiver is the only part that is controlled as a firearm, it could — could — be a way to build an AR without ATF paperwork. It wouldn’t even be that cheap, since these high-quality Airsofts are $200+

The question I have is, “is this even illegal if you are just building a semi-auto for your own use?”

Now, it could put Airsoft and the retailers in jeopardy, since they may be selling an 80%+ lower without appropriate FFL licensing and background checks. However, would it be illegal for an end user to own one or convert it for private use? Not talking about an NFA weapon or a felon owning the gun.
