Have a voodoo curse? You can call police, but there's not much they can do

Delray Beach - Most people would have walked right by the small rock sprinkled with orange dust. But Farel Paul became paralyzed with fear. He was convinced someone cast a voodoo spell on him by leaving the rock by his car door.

Paul called 911 in April, fearing that because his son touched the rock with his foot, something bad was on the way.

"Even though you may not believe in it, they seriously believe in it and you have to treat it that way," said Police Officer Paul Pitti, who responded to the call. "This guy wouldn't even go near the car. He was freaking out. He didn't want us to go near his car."

Delray Beach police occasionally get calls from Haitian residents fearing supernatural death threats and curses. The department takes a report and leaves it at that. There are no specific records available for voodoo calls.

"You have to be professional," Pitti said. "You don't want to make things worse."

About 10 percent of Delray Beach's population is Haitian.

People who practice the religion, sometimes referred to as Vodou or Vaudou, say it is one of peace. However, its meaning has been misconstrued and people have been led into violent acts.

Last year, a 25-year-old Fort Lauderdale man was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his father on Christmas Eve 2006. At trial, Barnard Joseph's attorney said his Haitian client suspected his mother was putting a voodoo curse on him and brutally attacked his parents to "battle the demons."

Poor man. Now that is spiritual bondage.

Jesus is Lord over the orange sprinkled rocks.

There's one in the White House, and there's not much the police can do there either...

When I lived in New Orleans, I used to see fellow co-workers freak out over similar incidents. Beans left circling a co-worker’s desk, a desk sprinkled with mysterious black powder (probably copier toner). We’d hear the occasional shrieks of discovery at the beginning of the work day.

Yes, imagine what Jim and Dwight could do with this in “The Office.”

I've never heard of voodoo practitioners taking hostages and bombing airplanes & office buildings.

This just shows a lack of creativity among the local police.

Police long ago learned that in the mind of the mentally ill and superstitious, the police are seen as a bit magical themselves. For example, they have long soothed schizophrenics by recommending the use of tin foil hat liners, and chains of paper clips to help them “ground” out the radio waves controlling their minds.

Joseph Wambaugh wrote an anecdote of how a police officer finally stopped a perpetually combative couple, by having them both put their right hand on his, and “pronouncing them divorced”. Once “divorced”, they returned to being friendly and polite to each other, finally relieved of their mutual burden.

In this case, all they needed to do was to create an elaborate “anti-black (magic) Voodoo” ritual, that would take days of hard work to perform, and he probably would have been right as rain. Maybe give him a talisman, as well, to protect him until the ritual had been completed.

When it was all over, he would see a “sign” that it had worked. Something common, like a piece of white paper blowing East. But if he saw it blowing West, he had to repeat the ritual. Psychologically, this keeps him trying to fix things until he gets over his paranoia.

The thing about voodoo is that these are not just spiritual threats. It’s kind of like waking up with a horse head in your bed, if you get my drift.

I have several friends in NYPD, they all have used this creativity to good results, some of the stories would make you laugh to tears. God bless them all.

“The type of behavior you describe opens up opportunities for FUN!”

I’m tellin’ ya, you’re on to something. I believe most of the incidents were people messing with the voodoo believers.
