Obama asset list boosted by $1,600 gift of waterdog Bo
bbc ^ | 17 May 2010

Barack Obama made millions in book royalties last year and took delivery of a special $1,600 gift - the family dog Bo, financial records show.

Royalties from "Dreams From My Father" and "Audacity of Hope" earned him at least $1m each, according to filings released by the White House.

Bo, a Portuguese water dog given to the Obamas by the late Senator Edward Kennedy and his wife was valued at $1,600 in Mr Obama's financial disclosure form.

The value of Mr Obama's Nobel peace prize medal and diploma were "not readily ascertainable", the document said.

I thought he gave away his cash award but his donations didn't show that.

$1600 for that mutt? It had better be able to play a mean game of scrabble, or make the best martini in the city for $1600.

I don't believe they would if he redirected the funds without actually accepting it. I think that is what you have to do tax-wise to keep it from being included as part of AGI.

Kennedy Endorses Water Dog For Obama Family
[from the unbelievable but true file!]
WBZTV.Com ^ | January 13, 2009

Senator Ted Kennedy made an important political endorsement Tuesday [January 2009]. Massachusetts' Senior Senator endorsed the Portuguese water dog as the perfect pet for the nation's new first family.

[snip]

"A Portuguese water dog is the perfect choice for first dog," Kennedy said in a written statement. "The Obama girls -- and their parents -- will love a Portuguese water dog. They're loyal, smart, loving and they became a real part of the family. And they definitely do not shed."

Senator Kennedy and wife Vicki have three Portuguese water dogs of their own. Sunny and Splash often accompany Kennedy to the Senate. "They love being around people and being part of the action," he said.

The Kennedy's just added a third Portuguese water dog to the family, a puppy named Captain Courageous – or 'Cappy' for short. ..."

"The black-and-white puppy is a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy"

Barack Obama's family pick first puppy, a Portuguese water dog named Bo
April 12, 2009

"file picture of a Portuguese water dog, the breed Barack Obama's family has picked as the first puppy"

THE family of US president Barack Obama have chosen a Portuguese water dog to be the first pet.

In what was one of the White House's most tightly kept secrets, the Washington Post revealed Mr Obama's daughters, 10-year-old Malia and seven-year-old Sasha, have settled on a pup named Bo.

The Post published photos of the presidential puppy meeting Mr Obama's family. See the photos here.

The black-and-white puppy is a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy. Bo is scheduled to make his big debut to the American public early next week.

Mr Obama's daughters chose the name Bo because first lady Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley, the newspaper reported.

White House aides told The Associated Press that the office of the first lady arranged an exclusive deal on the dog story with the Post.

Chappaquiddick:

"On Friday night July 18, 1969 around midnight a married man, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, was driving his oldsmobile on the island of Chappaquiddick with a single woman named Mary Jo Kopechne aboard when he, allegedly drunk, drove the car off a bridge and into a pond. He was leaving a party attended only by five married men and six unmarried women. Kennedy escaped the car and swam to shore. Mary Jo Kopechne was not quite so lucky. She died in the car, in the water.

Kennedy failed to even contact the police for a full nine hours, after he was told the car and body had been found.

The Kennedy family chartered a plane to immediately fly the victim's body to her hometown, Wilkes-Barre. No autopsy was conducted.

The person who asked me to publish this noted that there are at least two generations of Americans who are not all that familiar with this event. Even if they have heard something about it, they do not fully appreciate how blatantly incriminating this story is. It has faded into nothingness.

Historians will most likely recount these events for the benefit of the nation's youth but that will be 100 years from now. They'll likely have much to say about Kennedy's angry rants about how Bush and Republicans have lied, lied, lied. They'll likely point to guys like Kennedy in a discussion about how liberal ideology was largely discredited in this epoch. It will be interesting reading that none of us will have the opportunity to enjoy.

So if I were to kidnap BO (B.O. named the dog after himself?), the insurance company would find $1600 an acceptable ransom?

Ted "Water Dog" Kennedy...

Kennedy 'joked about Chappaquiddick'
Biographer reveals deadly incident was a 'favorite topic of humor'

August 28, 2009

"Edward Klein, speaking to WAMU guest host Katty Kay, said one of Kennedy's 'favorite topics of humor was, indeed, Chappaquiddick.'

"He would ask people, 'Have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick?' said Klein, a former Newsweek foreign editor and former editor in chief of the New York Times Magazine."

YouTube video: Kennedy liked to joke about Chappaquiddick?

"This isn't an accusation from Ted Kennedy's political opponents, but a nostalgic remembrance by one of his friends. Ed Klein, former Newsweek editor, tells the Diane Rehm Show:

"I don't know if you know this or not, but one of his favorite topics of humor was indeed Chappaquiddick itself. And he would ask people, have you heard any new jokes about Chappaquiddick? That is just the most amazing thing. It's not that he didn't feel remorse about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, but that he still always saw the other side of everything and the ridiculous side of things, too."

Portuguese waterdogs are cool. Until quite recently they were real working dogs used by watermen. Don’t blame this on the poor dog.

It does seem like a lot of money, especially when you consider that there are thousands of dogs on death row at shelters which you can get for practically nothing.

If Bo’s been de-studded he’s worth far less than $1600. Probably $400 at the waterdog rescue.

And based on that report I posted earlier, where a close friend of his said one of his favorite topics of humor was Chappaquiddick, I'd say he gave the dogs these names to mock the tragic event.

"I'd love to hear the legal theory behind that.

Actually, it's not that much of a stretch, considering the Constitutional principles involved. The USC prohibits emoluments to our elected and appointed federal officials. There's a strong case to be made that the Nobel Prize is a kind of emolument.

For this reason and a few others (mostly surrounding the fact it's a prize given by a foreign power), Teddy Roosevelt elected to wait to accept his Nobel Prize until after he actually left office. Why this wasn't spoken about more when Obama won his, is a mystery - not really, the press wasn't going to rain on his parade. More can be found below...

An Unconstitutional Nobel
