We were thinking the winter subdued the population. A recent loop down to Van Buren in late April of this year, we saw no carcasses. Previous years it would have been 10 to 15 on that loop.
Yeah, probably tastes like chicken, too. ;-)
Well officer, I was trying to get this rock loose and I used just a little piece of dynamite and I didn’t see that armadillo hole.
Missouri Dept of Conservation told me dillos spotted first in the early 80s in southern Mo. have been slowly migrating North ever since. (Black Bear have returned to South and some Middle Missouri parts too, more recently)
This morning I watched in disgust as three buzzards had breakfast on the armadillo my dog killed night before last. Not a pleasant way to start the day.
Perhaps they are just doing the jobs possums won't do (anymore).
Biogeography In progress 12/7/99
A small black bear was scarfing seed from our bird feeder a couple years ago. I got a quick pix of him...
These things have crossed the Missouri River and have been able to survive last year’s winter.
Iowegians are not gonna like what they do...
Um..I am from Iowa..what do they do? Now you’re scaring me, lol!
Specimen tree or bush in your yard ? They'll rip it out by digging under it.
Wonderful! What’s up with the northern migration of these things?
I was in the Van Buren area a few weeks ago scoping out some RV sites. I love the area. But yes, the winter may be hard on them but with the “gorebull warming” I guess they are foolishly moving north. By 2014 they will be scooting south from the ice age coming. tee hee
I’m not sure.
Armadillos are extremely tough critters. Eventually, they will reach a point where further north bound movement is curtailed by northern winters. I’m not sure where that will be. Maybe Duluth ?
International Falls, Minnesota should do ‘em in!!
There you go !
Armadillo = Possum on the half shell
Can happen, and people handling them need to be aware. That is, if you can catch one. Has to do with their low body temp similar to the human skin surface. Used for medical study as a result, listed elsewhere on this thread. But important to know. Primitive critter and amazing.
