LAKE FOREST -- A woman in Lake Forest shot her neighbor's dog after the animal attacked her 6-year-old daughter, authorities said.
The attack happened just after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday ...
A 14-year-old boy heard screams and saw a brown and white boxer grab his 6-year-old sister's shoulder while she was playing on the driveway with her 3-year-old sister.
The boy ran to the driveway and tried to pull his sister away from the animal, but the dog then bit the girl seven times on the leg, head, shoulder and face, authorities said.
The girl's mother, Jennifer Cooper, was on the porch with her 1-year-old child and saw the dog bite her daughter. She said she tried to get the children in the house and scare the dog away.
She told police the dog tried to lunge at the youngest child, and she then went inside the home, got a Glock pistol and shot the dog in the throat.
"It could have been much worse," Cooper told KTLA. "I could be at the E.R. right now with a child that's been severely mauled or even dead."

Good Mom!!
Good for her!
a Boxer?
good thing momma bears can’t shoot
Quick, somebody call Chet99’s mom and have her go down in the basement and wake him up. He is going to want to read this.
Must have been a Pit Boxer. Or an American Staffordshire Boxer. Or raised in the same box with a Pit Bull.
(Everyone knows only Pit Bulls are unpredictably violent!)
Bad doggie!
Impossible.
It had to be a pit mix that only looked like a Boxer.
To her credit, she tried to humanely shoot it instead of sneaking around like a gutless coward and poisoning it.
No to worry, the dog will be put down.
What? They're trying to save the dog?
Few people remember it today, but as late as the 1940s-50s, packs of stray dogs were a very dangerous threat in small town America. They still are in many towns in central and South America.
I knew one man who was elected town mayor on the sole platform of personally shooting the wild pack dogs that had menaced the town. He kept his campaign pledge, and was reelected.
During the national “salad days”, when cities and counties had lots of money, this threat declined. However, with shrinking budgets, they are likely to return.
This means that large dogs loose in public, alone or in packs, will be seen by the public as a threat. The critical point will come when just seeing them loose will impel many people to get their gun and to shoot it. It doesn’t matter what the dog owner thinks.
It is good to avoid shooting a dog in the head. An intact head allows for the testing for rabies. My little brother had to have rabies shots because my grandfather shot the biting dog in the head and killed it. So multiple shots to the body would be better.
The bigger question is, WHERE was the dog’s owner and why was it not leashed or confined to the owner’s property?
I won’t let my dogs run loose simply out of consideration of *their* safety, not to mention other people’s.
The owner doesn’t *care* if the dog gets hit by a car?
[or poisoned by some cowardly scumbag?]
Neighbors say this particular dog roams the area unleashed and the owner is unknown.
Many dogs are vicious and many dogs bite. Had it been a pit though, chances are far higher that the child would have been dead. Dogs that bite are one thing... dogs that rip throats out are another.

Good Shooting Mom
I have no problem with a mom having to do what a mom has to do, but I am surprised it was a Boxer (yes I know all dogs can bite).
As stupid as it may sound, my godfather back in the ‘80s spoke of groups of stray cats that were just frightening and dangerous around his neighborhood. He isn’t a wimp and was about to start shooting them. That’s how horrid these things were.
He run over it with his fly ride yo, know what I'm sayin'?
Dog of Peace (tm) Alert.
Give that woman a marksmanship medal. And if the dog’s owner complains, have the police shoot him!
“CA Mom shoots Boxer.”
Are we talking about the same dog?

Yup! ~Scary all right!~
Watch. She’ll probably eventually be arrested for (1) shooting a gun within the city limits; or (2) having an unlicensed gun or using a gun under the license of another person (husband). Betcha.

“Every single time you read a report of someone being savaged by a dog it is either a pitbull or a rottweiler. Period. They are both trash dogs and the breeds should be wiped out.”
Well Tomasco, that didn’t take very long, did it?
Prefer your crow raw or baked?
I’m surprised we don’t see more attacks by boxers; they’re very popular, and most people can’t keep up with their high energy and intensity.
My brother-in-law owns a boxer that is absolutely nuts, and likes to charge out the door any chance it gets. It’s only a matter of time before it bites someone which is too bad, since he’s a sweet dog most of the time.
If they looked like that....it is frightening. Cats with those hairstyles.
That’s a many-layered comment you have there.
Went through that myself.
The neighbor was feeding them like crazy and at first they just got “bold”...and then they got rabid.
That was one, long “fun” summer.
[not]
Fo shizzle homey.
Yeah, I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Boxers are in the top 10 ‘dangerous breed’ list.
You just don’t “see more” about them because it’s not as sensationalistic as “Killer Pit Bulls Attack!”.
They were bred from archaic Bull Dogs (the gladiator in the ring with a Bull “I AM SPARTICUS” dogs) and Mastiffs.
The “boxing” reflex is an attempt to hook the leg with a paw to take a man down. The Bull Mastiff's muzzle is short so that it can hold a man by the throat and still breath.
The Bull Mastiff is bred to be a herdsman's protection dog, gentle with his master and master's family and the flock, but ready to defeat in glorious battle any and all poachers and or their dogs that they encounter.
I see this in my dog. She looks like any potential encounter with humans and dogs could be either neighbors you wave to, or poachers that are to be knocked down and held by the neck with bites thrown in for good measure (and your little dog too!). She will “stalk” in a low crouch then sprint into a silent attack.
So a Boxer is the descendant of a Gladiator by way of a VeniVidiVici dog.
Alone and out on “patrol”, any number of normal 6 year old girl behaviors could have triggered an attack.
Hey, thanks!!
Me too.
‘Neighbors say this particular dog roams the area unleashed and the owner is unknown.”
Then why does the headline say “Shoots neighbor’s dog”?
Something doesn’t add up, here.
Most people do not take the time to research dog behavior, and then exercise and train their dogs properly.
Most people who love dogs never let dogs and children alone, unsupervised. The children can do really stupid things to dogs, which result in defensive bites and attacks, after the screaming and running starts.
All dogs should be confined if they are not out being supervised, exercised, or trained.
If people do not want to deal with all that, then I suggest a goldfish.
I had always been told that Staffordshire Terriers are one of the best family dogs. Is this a different breed or am I misinformed?
Inspector Clouseau, is that you?
Why would you be surprised?
Haven’t you seen the current “breed hit list”?

Shoot the dog; hang the owner.
I never hear of Goldies or Poodles doing this.
You’re going to be a smart ass because I detest contradictory statements?
Seeking the real -truth- of any incident is worthy of sarcasm?
Pardon *me* for looking for honesty where there seems to be none.
Why does he have a dishwasher in his trunk?
Then you’re not listening.
They -have-.
