An 81-year-old Army vet from East Northport, Long Island is now behind bars for killing a squirrel. William Thomas was convicted in February of misdemeanor animal abuse, and is now serving out his 30-day sentence. According to Newsday, he used a pellet gun to shoot the animal at his home back in 2008, and neighbors have told authorities that the old man would leave bait in his yard and shoot at animals from a window. He's been arrested 12 times in 5 years for wildlife violations.

His daughter has expressed concern over proper medical treatment while locked up, as he allegedly has a host of health problems, including dementia and hypothyroidism. She told the paper, "He has a lot of confusion and dizziness. Hopefully, the people in there have respect for the elderly."

Whoa... My brother-in-law must kill 20 squirrels a year with a BB rifle in his back yard in Dallas.
You can go to jail for that in New York?

I can’t imagine people going to jail for something like that. Especially around these parts.

My city that I live in had a mass killin of prarie dogs here about 2 years ago. Poisened the lot of them....

If you think squirrels are bad you should have a problem with woodchucks. Those things are a disaster in the making. They make tunnels in your yard about six inches wide and tear up your lawn.

We've got one the size of a bear cub. The first time I saw it standing up I looked around for Momma Bear before my eyes focused and I saw it was just a woodchuck.

I have no problems with baiting and torturing rodents.

Depends on what the torture is. Is he live-trapping them, then dismembering them with pliers and chortling in evil glee? That could be a problem.

He’s killing 81-year-old squirrels? Why doesn’t he just let them die of old age?

Get a couple of big, hungry cats?

I’ve found dead squirrels in my garden, which I’m sure were left by Mr. Boots, my very large black/white cat. He’s a super hunter.

Woodchucks, I learned, have an irresistible taste for apples and very poor heat tolerance. I highly recommend live traps which open at both ends.

That's my plan. I just need a teeny weeny gun to deliver the coup de grace once I have him. The ones I have are all too loud.

I wonder if any of these would work http://www.bitterapple.com/
I know they’re for spraying on fur and feathers.. but I wonder if spraying it on wood would do anything to keep those pests away.

Ingredients: Water, isopropanol 20%, bitter principles, and extractives.

Nevermind about spraying it on the house, after reading the ingredients.

It’s official. You can spend more time in jail for killing a rodent than for killing a child.

Say what you will about rats and mice, etc.
But I raised some white mice when I was young. And in a CLEAN ENVIRONMENT, rats and mice are fastidious about their cleanliness and grooming, etc.

But they are also very smart - well, rodent-wise. And very opportunistic. In an environment where survival is a struggle, food or decent rodent housing is slim, they will get into whatever it takes to survive. And that includes dirty rotten garbage and disease ridden areas - whatever it takes.

Squirrels around here sit up on their haunches and chirp loudly. They make a sound that penetrates the brain. It can make a person insane in a short time.

I often think about buying a quality Pellet gun, but they cost as much as a good rifle, and today there are other Squirrels I’m preparing for.

squirrels = “tree rats”
*******************************************************
I agree with that.

We have a bird feeder, is that baiting—if the intention is for the birds to feed?

I hate the tree-rats.

I’ve had numerous hammocks (80 bucks a pop) and outdoor cushions ruined by squirrels chewing them up.

They will also work on the chimney to get access to the attic, once in... kiss your Christmas stuff goodbye, or saved mementos from your kids childhood.

They’re cute at a park or something but they ARE NOT cute tearing up property or eating the fruit on your own property. (fruit that would NOT have been there without MY planting, MY labor and MY money—eat out of my bowl, I’ll bite..that’s nature)

Rats are prob’ly at the WH now because they’re doing some crazy type of composting and there were bees swarming because the beekeeping at the WH isn’t being carried out properly.

Green and nature is beautiful but there’s a line...
