I’m hoping to raise my beds eventually. For the moment my “garden beds” are 4 sheets of landscape fabric on top of stomped-down weeds. Hopefully after a couple of weeks they’ll have smothered the weeds enough, then I’ll cut slits to plant seeds through.
It’s kind of “the lazy person’s square-foot garden” but in this case it’s necessary. I have some mobility problems, there’s no way I could even get a tiller out to my garden much less run it. But this is a start.
Well, then you may need a fence — or, at least, deer repellent to protect your veggies.
Mine are not that tall, although I could easily add some layers if I could persuade my husband to do it! LOL. This project has gotten much more elaborate as we have gone on, so I have to be careful what I ask him to do.
Do you have pictures? I’d love to see your layout and hear about what you are growing and what has been successful and what has been disappointing. This will be my first year.
I use a Mantis. The only problem is that it tills so fast and so well that the job is done before I feel that I’ve gotten good use out of the little thing. LOL
That is a great looking garden.
Free meat...
I had a Mantis too, but I cannot find the carb repair kit for less than $25.00 and that is what I paid for it at a garage sale. I go to the local hardware store and rent theirs. My neighbor and I split the $20.00 for a full day rental.
1400 ft of corn, 200 ft of black eyed peas, 400 ft of okra,200 ft of potatoes, dill, herb garden and then 50 tomato plants and 50 pepper plants of various varieties, 200 ft of pole beans and 100 ft of peas, suash and pumpkin all over...........makes me tired to type it!
That is a clever raised garden!! Pinging this so my hubby will take a look and maybe get an idea!!
Could you grow corn in that?
OMG. That Greens N’ Beans is food pron at it’s finest. :)
I made some mistakes this year. This was my first time gardening from seed instead of buying tiny plants at the store, and I didn’t “harden” the plants (or allow 10 weeks for tomatoes)
It’s been a very learning experiance. Next year I will know to start seeds earlier, and to bring them in and out for a couple of hours each day to get them accostomed to the sun and wind.
My great-grandfather used to keep a huge garden during the Great Depression, and he not only fed his family, but anyone from the neighborhood who needed a bag of vegetables would always stop down. He never said no to anyone who came to him for help.
Thanks to the people who posted the pictures of the old time gardens. :)
Awesome looking work. Very rewarding, huh.
So, what have you heard about SB 510?
I’m planning to devote a new 4 x 8 bed to growing corn square foot style. We’ll see. I’ve never done it before. I’m going to plant one variety in a 4 x 4 space and 2-3 weeks later plant another variety in the other half of the bed.
Just what I read here. I have come to the conclusion, I won't allow them on my property.
We ( Roswell, NM) still have a vibrant farmers market.
I am concerned because I have a 35 by 75 ft green house and plans for 4 more, this was to be our future and I won't let them take it.
THank you. I’ve just picked my first harvest — a tray full of lettuce and three little onions. That will be the stary of tonight’s salad. I’ll probably add chilled tuna and sliced hard boiled egg, perhaps some left over 5 bean salad.
I’d post a picture of all the lettuce (it hardly shows in the garden what I took) except my Kodak downloader is giving me fits this afternoon. Maybe later.
stary=start
