Knoxville News Sentinel ^ | May 30, 2010 | Matt Lakin

Sherry D. Matthews swears she stops at every red light. The cameras say different.

They've disagreed 41 times since March of last year, according to Knoxville City Court records - sometimes as often as five times in a month. Matthews, who lives in West Knoxville, hadn't paid a single ticket as of last week.

The exponential growth of these things just might be feeding increased dissatisfaction with out of control government. Ya think?

Wouldn’t red light video straighten this out? It’s not like we don’t have the technology.

All sorts of battles going on over these “legal theft devices” in Chattanooga, too. A Doctor friend of mine got a ticket for supposedly running a red light in Red Bank, TN, near Chattanooga. They sent him a video clip of the deed. Trouble was the video showed that he was indeed in the intersection when the light turned red. He’s fighting it and now the powers that be are trying to say that the white line painted across the road at the intersection isn’t the demarcation point for being in the intersection, even though that is exactly what TDOT regulations say.....

Did you see where some of our legislators tried to get the speed cam in Bluff City outlawed? (Between Johnson City and Bristol) It was reported that thing in bringing in $200k a MONTH. That seems hard to believe, but, I’m pretty sure that’s what I read

In this woman’s case, she has run red lights 41 times. I’d say that she must believe that they don’t apply to her.

Heard a story (can’t confirm veracity) where some high school kids faked their VP’s license plate on to a similar car then ran a bunch a red lights.

Here in Texas, he would lose. Being "in the intersection when it turns red" means nothing here. The law would say he sped up on yellow and got caught in the intersection on red and that he should have slowed down on yellow.

She probably has and there are a lot of bad drivers out there and I am all for hammering them.

But there are question on the accuracy. I recently saw someone get flashed in an intersection I use every day.

The sequence is green>yellow>quick red then a green right turn arrow, The driver in front of me got flashed (and I assume ticketed) rolling right on the red. Those of us who use that intersection know the sequence and when we see the yellow, we know the right turn green is going to come on. So we just keep rolling. But, we had better be coming to a useless complete stop, wasting gas and backing up traffic, or plan to donate to the fund.

There was a story here last week about a lawyer who subpoenaed the red light camera to testify against her client. Then asked for a dismissal on the basis that the camera didn't show up. She won the case, though the judge didn't rule on the merits of her argument.

There’s a near war going on in Red Bank over the traffic cams. The citizens are outraged, but, as has become all too typical these days, the city is ruling against the will of the people. They’re writing similar amounts of tickets, but I don’t think they’re actually collecting on the majority of them. People around here are fed up with it and heads are going to roll come November.....

I still giggle about the story of the guy in CA that got a picture of him running a red light and a fine of $40. So he mailed a picture of $40 to them. He later received a picture of handcuffs, and subsequently sent the real $40.

A happy thought on this somber day of reflection and memory.

Correct me if I am wrong, but these devices are owned and maintained by a private entity. It is illegal for that company to send tickets to potential violators

I have been told to just ignore the envelop that is sent, saying that you never received it. It has worked for several people I know that have used it as a defense.

I've heard that, too. Unless they send it via Certified Mail I don't see how they could prove you ever got it.

Your screen name wouldn't have something to do with Dacula, GA, would it? I grew up about halfway between Duluth and Lawrenceville.

There is not a uniform interval of time alloted for red light cameras, throughout Tennessee. Some use quicker time intervals between yellow and red than others, proving that these are nothing more than income producers for cities.

Yep, Dacula, Georgia. I am next to 85 and H. Mill.

I took the name Dacula, because of Buckhead and the famous Kinkos fax incident.
