The Newport Aquarium has upgraded its exhibit of bizarre sea creatures to include more than a dozen new species. Some of those include Japanese spider crabs, electric flame scallops and spotted garden eels.
Chris Pierson, the aquarium's husbandry director, said the purpose of renovating the Bizarre and Beautiful Gallery is to make things "more family-friendly, more kid-friendly."
The gallery re-opened Friday with a new configuration allows more visitors. It also gives children better access to the exhibits by putting some tanks closer to the floor.
The aquarium also used the renovation to upgrade equipment and reduce energy costs.
electric flame scallops
I was there two weeks ago and saw the Japanese crab.
Should have come last week, it was good with butter.
Looking forward to taking the grandkids there when they come for a visit.
They itch but are easy to get rid of.......
Newport, Kentucky, near Cincinnati.
This is Newport Oregon folks.
A new exhibit just opened up this week.
In our local hosp waiting room the have a live feed camera/tv in the sea fish tank, ambiance while you are in pain/puking/suffering.
Also around the corner from the Aquarium is the Mark Hatfield Marine Sci Center which is free/donation and IMO it is THE place to go for kids/families for interactive displays and lotsa NOAA USGS stuff along with all the fish and marine life you pay to see at the Aquarium.
NOAA is also moving in a huge operations base here which will employ close to 200 locals and use local businesses also...a real economic boom for us.
And ya didn’t stop by to say Hi to us Freepers...: (
Well ya didn’t post the State Mister.
Newport Rhode Island/California/Oregon????
Had I known where you were I certainly would have stopped by. Do you work at the aquarium? I’ll be back this summer with the grand kids. You’ll recognize us. The 6,4 & 2 year olds will be in handcuffs and connected waist chains :)
