Nvidia says Windows too bloated for tablets

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has opined that Android - rather than Windows - will power the majority of next-gen tablet devices.

Nvidia says Windows too bloated for tablets"

Windows is too big and it's too full featured for smartbooks and tablets. [But] the good news is that we finally have an operating system to unite behind," Huang told PC World.

"Android is an operating system that has gained a tremendous amount of momentum all over the world. [It] has become the fastest growing mobile operating system in the world and, in fact, surpassed the [Apple] iPhone in terms of growth and in terms of users."

However, Huang emphasized that Google would have to tweak its mobile OS so that it could better power a new generation of tablet computers.

"Andy Rubin and his team [at Google] know exactly where the industry needs to go," said Huang.

"Android started out as a phone but it's not lost on them that the tablet is going to be very important and that the [OS] has to evolve and be enhanced in certain capabilities, in order to be a good tablet operating system."

Combine Android creeping on to bigger and bigger devices with the earth shattering announcement that I think is likely to come from Adobe within the next year about a certain graphics program and we might just finally see desktop Linux actually start to take off.

Windows is too big and it’s too full featured for smartbooks and tablets

Because what we need is something too small, locked-down, compromised, and not as feature rich?

Maybe he needs to look at some of those new tablets running 7, with a 10-hour battery life, and the ability to run real programs and not just widget front-ends of websites.

Not the current crop of distros. Android and desktop Linux are nowhere near the same enough to have a halo effect.

This is turning into a real shootout at the OK corral...

Will Android become the dominant mobile OS?

And:

Moorestown Won’t Run Windows, but Oaktrail Will...says Intel

IOW...Windows is too bloated and we intend to bloat Android asap to catch up?

Don’t bloat the phone OS, but make it so we can add bloating if we wish and bundle a prebloated version for tablets and larger devices.

Can’t go wrong with modular bloating.

Glass half full: the new generation of mobile chips are taking a step backward for size.

I have a fully functional notebook that ways under 3 pounds and has a good 8 hours of battery life and is in the price range of a lot of these tablets.

I just don't understand the desire for a device that has the functionality of a smart phone, but a bit bigger screen.

The difference in cost between a smart phone (without the contract), a tablet, and a low end CULV notebook is almost negligible.

I guess if you've got money to burn and need to have every flavor of latest gadget that's great, but it seems like practical uses that aren't met by a smart phone are limited.

CES 2010: NVIDIA Tegra 2 to Power Tablets in 2010

Video at link

****************************EXCERPT**************************************

Amongst the tablet hype at CES, NVIDIA made a major announcement on Thursday introducing their latest Tegra 2 mobile chipset. The Tegra 2 chipset incorporates 8 independent processors to handle web browsing, HD video encoding/decoding as well as mobile gaming. It also accomplishes all this with a very low power consumption. In part, this is accomplished by the use of the ARM Cortex A9 dual core processor. The ARM Cortex A9 is the same processor that has been rumored to be utilized in Apple's future tablet.

NVIDIA's Tegra 2 powered Tablets boasts the following features:

- Over 16 hours of HD video or 140 hours of music on a single charge
- Adobe Flash Player 10.1
- 10x faster than processors used in smartphones today
- Playback 1080p video
