An 8-mile chase between Orange County deputies and an armed car thief ends in a crash at Lockheed Martin in Orange County this morning.
Jeff Williamson of the Orange County Sheriff's Office said two deputies and the 21-year-old suspect were injured in the incident.
Williamson has not released the name of the suspect, but said the man has a lengthy criminal history in Central Florida.
The incident began at the BP gasoline station at Colonial and Powers drives sometime between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.
Deputies said they spotted a suspicious unoccupied blue Chevy Malibu at the gas station. They ran the plates through their database and discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen.
They waited for the driver to return to the car and when he did, they blocked him in and attempted to detain him.
"The man jumped into the vehicle and rammed it into the open door of one of the deputies," Williamson said. The impact slammed the door on the deputy's chest. The deputy suffered minor injury, but was not hospitalized.
Investigators said another deputy fired one round at the suspect, but missed. Williamson said detectives are still looking to see what that round struck.
The suspect then sped away from the scene with deputies in pursuit.
Sheriff's deputies chased the man through Orlo Vista, MetroWest and then to Lockheed Martin where he crashed through the arm of the security gate.
Deputies chased him into the property of the aerospace and defense company and found he crashed into a ditch and attempting to run away.
At some point, one of the deputies who also had been pursuing the suspect crashed into a ditch at Lockheed Martin. Reports show rescue crews transported him to Dr. Phillips Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
