It’s simple: The least amount of ingredients in a product the better. For example an apple only has one ingredient. Butter only has one, unless it is salted butter. Watch out for nuts though, sometimes they have powdered soy added to the container. Purchase fresh ingredients and make a pizza, it is easier than you think. This lifestyle does take a lot of planning, but it’s worth it. The bonus is that it is cheaper than purchasing processed foods. It just ticks me off to see all the first-of-the-month grocery carts filled with Hot Pockets and bologna. Give them stamps for oatmeal and eggs.

We also don’t buy sugar-free, fat-free, low-fat, or low-cal. Many of these products have ingredient lists a mile long. Sorry, but you’ll never convince me the fat-free Cool Whip made with partially fractionated maltodextrin isolate (yes I made that up) is better for me than heavy whipping cream. The same with margarine. Eat the real thing sparingly and get the exercise your body needs anyway and your set.

There is much more too it than this study. I have studied on farm records for years. The system is working its way out, called letting the market decide. Many times the goal of management is not yields. Sad to say, most times it is not profit. Usually is it convenience.

Give a farmer in the “poor country” a choice between short handled hoe and one application of chemical, and he will go for the technology. You and I will also.

You began this with a discussion of evil. What is evil?

It is a complicated system, all systems are. There are no magic answers.

So you think I work for Monsanto do you? When you run out of arguments you call someone a name or make an accusation. Very juvenile and very liberal.

I’m not a liberal nor did I ever use the world evil on this thread. I just gave you real studies showing roundup ready GMO soybeans produce lower yields. And many farmers overseas are rejecting this non-sense and showing more common sense that most American farmers, have you seen the new round up ready resistant weed report and charts? A big eye opener, round up will soon be useless, then what? The thing is there is and was more than enough corn and soy beans before Monstanto, I know, my family are all farmers, big farmers, it sits around and rots in silo’s. Nobody starves in this world for lack of food, they starve because of corrupt and often islamic terrorist governments or socialist/tyrant dictators ...

You and I don’t have to argue of this, I just showed you studies and you brushed them off, is one a liberal because they are against GMO farming? I think not, many conservatives right here on the FR even are right there with me on this one ...

they’re using said seeds here and suing farmers who try to save seeds fro year to year for patent infringement. Sort of like Microsoft licensing software instead of selling it. Makes me sick.

I just signed up for food stamps yesterday, also Medicaid and disability - I have been putting it off for a few years but after I ended up in the ER twice and spent a week in the hospital recently I have no other option. I can't work because of nerve pain in my leg and a bad back and most jobs in this area are at fast food joints and gas stations which require standing for long periods of time.

I have started writing a shopping list and menus for me so I can eat healthier. I will probably buy a few junk foods at first - the stuff I crave, the things I would want to buy if I had the money, or that I just couldn't justify buying when I needed other items. But after that it will be meats, fresh and frozen fruits and veggies and other items that are not overly processed.

I always hate seeing people abusing the system and having carts full of junk - a few items I had no problem with but when it was ALL junk that was just sad.

Butter is one of the first items on my list - you can't find a margarine now that isn't made with soybean oil.

This is just the same concept of using one study to prove global warming. These are complex systems.

Do you know what was in the study? We have yield contests in agriculture where farmers get over 500 bushels per acre. If it was that simple, everyone would do it. You want to trust experts and have simple solutions to apply to everyone and every situation. Oh I forgot, we have no politics at the university level.

Do you understand statistics? That 10 bushel dif could be from anything. Lets say you get a statistically significant number, just means that there is a 30% change you are wrong.

Just because something is bad for you doesn't mean it is bad or good for everyone. The good Lord created us different and complex, heck a good share of us can smoke with no ill effects.

The evidence is total production is up because of genetically modified seed. Yld per acre is not a good measure to hang your hat on. REPEAT, YIELD PER ACRE IS NOT A GOOD MEASURE TO HANG YOUR HAT ON.

Genetically modified seed is NOT EVIL. It has good aspects and bad aspects to it. It is what it is, just technology. The reason we use chemicals and GMO is that no one, including you and me, wants to sweat in the sun pulling those damn weeds.

I think you are acting like a liberal because you are not thinking. Because you have a prescription solution for everyone.

Several weeks ago I discovered that the local COSTCOs in the NoVA area sold “Mexicokes” in glass bottles and made with sugar, not HFCS. Picked up a case, and was completely hooked - the taste is noticably different and better. They are a bit more pricey - ~0.75 for 12 oz bottle vs ~$0.25 for a 12oz can ... but COMPLETELY worth it.

Not to mention that these GMO seeds are destroying the non hybrid seeds and crops of nearby farms. Then Monsanto ect., have the audacity to go after the farmers for not paying them for the use of their seeds.

Ya, maybe I should tweak a gene in “strep throat” and then every kid that catches it owes me money ... (same concept)

It’s a start but I suspect that right now sugar is cheaper than corn poison is the true reason for this switch. Are there still tariffs on sugar imports to protect a few cane and beet growers?

lot’s of altnertives, I realize that, but still, I’d like to see the move back to Cane Sugar.

Beet sugar would be nice too. Beets are easy to grow, and the mush left from the extraction process makes a good livestock feed. I've read that the reason more farmers grow corn instead of beets was due to the mechanization issue, but couldn't the equipment used for carrots be modified to work on sugar beets? Most sugar beets are kind enough to stick their heads out of the soil, making them easy for the machine to grab.

Been thinking about that for a while now, started as part of my prepper planning. I have sugar beets planted now just to experiment with.

If anyone’s interested, here are directions for making your own soda, using real sugar: http://biology.clc.uc.edu/Fankhauser/Cheese/ROOTBEER_Jn0.htm

(Technically, it’s for making root beer, but it will work for any flavor soda)

I know I liked the Throwback Mountain Dew (with real sugar) much better than their current version...

I recently picked over 100# of HUGE lemons and have been making some awesome lemonade every since...

2 Cups Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
1 Cup Sugar
Add Water to make 1 gallon

I take a cup of hot water, dissolve the sugar first and then add it to the juice & Water. This makes a fairly tart lemonade, you may want additional Sugar to your taste.
