A boatload of watchers got their money's worth when they witnessed a rare encounter of eight killer whales killing and feasting on a sea lion off the Southern California coast.

Video taken Tuesday by Capt. Dave's Dolphin & Whale Safari shows the the orcas playing and eating in front of passengers on a charter cruise near Dana Point.

Capt. Dave Anderson says it was the first time in two years he has seen a killer whale off the Orange County coast.

Anderson says one of the whales swam up to the whale-watching boat and stared into the window of the underwater viewing pod. He says another put its mouth on the engine of the backup boat that he was using to photograph the whales.

He says it appeared the adult whales were teaching a calf to feed.

So this is why they’re called Killer Whales. Cats eat birds, we eat chicken, dogs love hamburger and coyotes eat cats and and and...

McDonalds has served millions and the California Cows aren’t happy.

They got to see nature in action. The whales on my whale watch were lazy. They just surfaced and went about their business.

Just dangle a Sea World trainer over the side. They love those.

I wonder what it would take to get those Orcas to visit Pier 39 in San Francisco?

. . . one of the whales swam up to the whale-watching boat and stared into the window of the underwater viewing pod.

Just checking to see if what they keep in the refrigerator looks as tasty as what's being served in the dining room?

What they didn't know was that the whale song they were hearing translated to "Son don't eat those tourists you never know where those things have been. Eat some sea lions, it builds character."

Did your lions come back? They were up here for awhile.

It has been a year since I have been to Pier 39 but they were in full force then.

I do have to say that it was quite an experience when the mother humpback watched us watching her. She came right up to the boat and was within reach.

Ever get the feeling the orca was looking at peoples like snacks in a vending machine?

I got a chance to see a pod of Orca in the wild once. They weren't feeding, but they were impressive none the less. I got the same feeling i had when i saw a wild wolf up in Glacier National Park. Beautiful, but check the door and never doubt that you are in the presence of a super predator.
