Sparrows Point to idle portion of steel plant, lay off workers

About 600 employees work in areas to be affected June 04, 2010|By Andrea K. Walker, The Baltimore Sun Several hundred workers at the Sparrows Point steel mill are in danger of temporarily losing their jobs as the plant prepares to shut down for 30 days because of low demand.

The primary steelmaking facilities at the Baltimore County plant — three main divisions at the sprawling facility — will be shut down by July 1, company spokeswoman Elizabeth Kovach confirmed Friday. Union leaders had notified workers of the temporary layoffs and planned shutdown on Thursday.

About 600 people work in the parts of the plant to be affected, but Kovach said it is unclear the number of workers who will be out of a job. "How many people will go on layoffs versus doing other work in the plant has not been determined," Kovach said.

The future of Sparrows Point, a key economic engine for the surrounding community and one of the last vestiges of Baltimore's manufacturing sector, has been in question in recent months. Sparrows Point is owned by Russian steel conglomerate Severstal, which is undertaking a restructuring that could include selling plants and laying off workers.

I used to deliver 'black beauty' to that yard 4 or 5 years ago.

It looked like it was on the downstroke at THAT time.

While I was in college I worked summers in Beth Steel Sparrows Point (’64 - ‘67) and I was told that 25,000 people worked there, not including the shipyards. Once I was told by a steel union thug to “leave some for tomorrow” when I was doing more than other (permanent) employees. Normally worked about 4 -5 hours. On one job on the midnight shift I read “Gone with the Wind” in 2 nights and was getting incentive pay to boot! My brother just retired from the place in January; worked there all of his life. My Dad worked there 2 decades and my Mom for approx 10 years.

We watched the unions play a MAJOR role in destroying a once great company and watched them & the company totally rape the retirements of countless thousands. Unions are just legalized Mafia these days. It looks like they served a very useful purpose in the early 1900s but quickly became totally corrupt.

The black beauty was for sandblasting ship hulls in dry dock.

With the exception of the actual work area .. it was a a ghost town back then

I put fuel on the Bethlehem Steel ore carrier Sparrows Point a few times when she loaded at BN 5 in Superior.
