The small town of Bedford, Va., is home to 21 men who sacrificed their lives on D-Day, June 6, 1944. It is now also the home of one of the world's few public memorial busts of communist dictator Josef Stalin.

“So why not just a plaque acknowledging the sacrifices of the Soviet people and do away with the bust of the mass murderer?”

Because this has NOTHING to do with the Soviet People.

"...That said, there really isn’t any place for Stalin in a D-Day Memorial..."

Stalin's paranoid killing-off 30,000 Soviet military officers prior to WWII actually prolonged the war!

This isn’t a war memorial. It’s a D-day memorial. Stalin had less to do with the success of D-day than e.g. de Gaulle.

I’m glad Stalin’s bust is there though. Because someone can take a hammer to it and so speak for the millions who suffered because of him.

Send Stalin’s bust to the White House. A fitting replacement for Churchill’s bust, which Obama immediately returned to the UK as soon as he took office.

When he said we will Barry you?

I assume that's a photoshop of Khrushchev. I've read that there is no photo of him pounding the desk with his shoe.

Most certainly, but that also has to be balanced by the fact that without Stalin's ruthless five year plans forcing through industrialisation, the USSR wouldn't have been in any sort of position to equip and maintain an army capable of halting the Germans at the gates of Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad....

Little kids walk by this figure on their way to get ice cream. I bet they wonder who that man is (who would have starved them and their families to death, if he didn’t walk them out into a frozen field and put a bullet into each of their heads first.)

Makes me proud to be an American.

Yeah, this is what we’re about: monuments to sociopathic mass-murderers. This is who we now immortalize in bronze.

That it is allowed to stand is yet another example of how lost we are.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that there will not be a hefty price to pay for this. The universe does not care about your “sophisticated” explanation of why this insanity should be permitted/tolerated.

If it’s a D-Day memorial, then why isn’t Candaian Prime Minister Mackenzie King represented? Weren’t Canadian paratroopers involved in the D-Day landing?

And why is there a bust of Truman? He wasn’t even Vice President yet in 1944!
Perhaps most curious, why is there no bust of General Eisenhower?

There were 177 Free French Troops who landed on Sword Beach under British Command, and a few more who landed the night before as part of the British Special Air Service (SAS) Brigade. Four French Cruisers also provided naval support.
Many of the other Free French forces (about 400,000 strong) were otherwise engaged fighting in Italy at the time...

"But we have to keep in mind, without the Soviets, Hitler would have in all likelihood won that war."

The Soviets were forced into a war with Hitler because of Operation Barbarosa. Before then, they were his willing allie who carved up Poland and most likely were the ones that committed the atrocities in Katyn forrest. Not to mention attacking Finland after that.

I don't give them much credit for helping win the war against Hitler. We did it to save democracies. They did it to save themselves. And without our help in the Lend/Lease program, they would have lost their war with Hitler.

If Hitler has won that war then the murderous Soviet Union would have been finished. And communism would have suffered a major setback. The outcome was not perfect. However there is the possibility that the two dictatorships would have destroyed one another.

Really? None of the Soviet people died defeating Hitler? Hmm, I’ll have to go back and check the history books. I could’ve sworn I read that someplace.
