GM retracts 'Don't say 'Chevy''

DETROIT,

- U.S. automaker General Motors put an in-house directive in reverse Thursday, backing away from a memo that asked employees to stop saying "Chevy."

The original memo signed by Alan Batey, vice president for Chevrolet sales and service, and Jim Campbell, GM vice president for marketing told employees at the corporation's Detroit headquarters "consistency" is important for the Chevrolet brand -- and it would be helpful in that regard to stop referring to Chevrolets at Chevys, The New York Times reported.

The memo said, "In global markets, we are establishing a significant presence for Chevrolet , and need to move toward a consistent brand name."

"When you look at the most recognized brands throughout the world, such as Coke or Apple for instance, one of the things they all focus on is the consistency of their branding," the memo said. "Why is this consistency so important? The more consistent a brand becomes, the more prominent and recognizable it is with the consumer."

Several newspapers pointed out that "Chevy" has been used in GM advertising for decades and GM quickly retracted the directive on Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reported.

GM called the first memo "poorly worded" and said the reaction was proof of "how passionately people feel about Chevrolet."

"We love Chevy. In no way are we discouraging customers or fans from using the name," the second memo said.

They think throwing away the “Chevy” name is going to be good for business. Where do they find these people?

These tools just dorked their careers at Chevrolet up pretty good.

The other aspiring VPs there are probably giving each other high-fives in the executive lounge over these two screwups.

Just thinking about how consistent Apple is with its branding ~ Apple ~ MacIntosh ~ Apple ~ Mac ~ Apple ~ Mac ~ Macintosh ~ Mac ~ Apple.

Sho'nuff eh!

Then, besides Chevrolet, and Chevy, "Grove Tube" taught us all "Cheby" ~ that's Hispanic for "Chevy".

Absolutely!

For many years the magazine that claimed the widest circulation in Hispano-America was "Low Rider".

It was published in ENGLISH!

Yessireebob, I think we have a suitible slogan, because they'll have to learn English to read about how to do it, how to get it, how to be it!

“When you look at the most recognized brands throughout the world, such as Coke or Apple for instance, one of the things they all focus on is the consistency of their branding,”

Let me get this straight. The argument is that the bottlers of Coca Cola -nicknamed and cited as ‘Coke’) is an example of how ‘Chevrolet’ should not be called ‘Chevy’?!?!?

I'd like my GM bailout money back, please.

Please!

Only an Indonesian turd blossom would steal a great auto emblem and then prohibit its use.

Can we please say Islam?

I thought it was strange of GM to order the word Chevy to be dropped since their latest Silverado commercial in the Dallas area featured an announcer with a very heavy Hispanic accent who liberally used the term Chevy.

It’s not just about the body work and an engine. Don’t forget the chasis/suspension and the trim inside the coach.

You need to be powerful, fast, AND turn on dime without sacrificing control and have pleasing, resilient interiors. Oh yeah, and reliability.

From the 1980s and 1990s you’d think they approached this as a matter of trade-offs instead of striving for the complete presentation.

They can call it Chevrolet, Chevy, Cadillac, Caddy, GMC, Buick, whatever. I will NEVER purchase another GM product. I’d rather buy a used Trabant, if I were into buying communist junk. (and I have over $3K on my GM card towards a purchase.)

No, the "Chevy II" and the "Heavy Chevy" submodel designations make it a brand name.

There are probably several more "Chevy" derivatives.

Look, I’d settle for the whale-like wallowing and slewing from side-to-side like in the old days if they made a car that was fast, comfortable, and didn’t turn into a rattletrap old “CHevy” in two years.

I got rid of my S-10 in 2004. Not a bad vehicle, but not great. But the deal breaker was the suck customer service from the dealer AND Chevy(rolet) corporate.

I should have sued the bastards for very poorly designed unsafe brakes, which they refused to deal with; and nearly caused several accidents. Instead, I just got rid of it & swore to never buy another GM POS as long as I live.

I can’t say here how angry I was that our confiscated tax dollars went to them and their unions.
