Peanut industry fights to stay on airline flights

Peanuts, as familiar to air travelers as tray tables and landing gear, could be grounded by the federal government. And Georgia’s peanut industry is fighting the idea.

A recent proposal from the U.S. Department of Transportation for a variety of rules affecting air travel includes plans to consider new restrictions on peanut snacks -- or even an outright ban -- to accommodate fliers with allergies.

The DOT is considering banning peanuts and peanut products from being served on airline flights; banning them from flights where an allergic passenger has asked for a peanut-free flight in advance; or requiring a peanut-free buffer zone when requested in advance -- which some airlines already say they provide.

It's not a new issue. In 1998 the DOT issued guidance calling for "peanut-free zones" on planes when allergic passengers were aboard, but Congress told the agency to refrain from further action until a scientific study was done.

Since then, peanuts have become less common on airline flights anyway. Continental, United, American and AirTran do not serve them. Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines still serves peanuts as one of its complimentary snacks. Merger partner Northwest did not until absorbed by Delta. Dallas-based Southwest is another major peanut-serving carrier.

Delta says it already accommodates passengers with peanut allergies by creating a buffer zone when notified in advance. Only non-peanut snacks are served in the buffer zone, which includes three rows ahead of and behind the allergic flier, according to Delta's Web site.

I think the solution here is to have "no peanut" flights. That way, those who are allergic to peanuts can fly peanut-free.

Everybody else can then fly on the other flights and have all the peanuts they can handle. I would like to fly on the planes that have peanuts myself. I can handle a lot of peanuts.

I get to post this pic twice tonight?

Why weren't folks dropping over dead when I was a kid and everybody took PB&J to school?

I wish I still had the luxury of peanuts on my flights. I only seem to get small bags of lame bland pretzels.

I can eat a lot of peanuts too. What I can't handle are the wheat-based snacks ~ if I ate those I'd have to ride in the toilet most of the way.

Frankly, gluten intolerant people are a full 3.4% of the American population. You take a plane like the A300-600 which is configured to handle 298-360 passengers, and you could have over 13 Celiacs, and that's definitely more than enough to tie up all the toilets for the entire duration of the flight.

Peanuts are a perfectly suitable substitute for the ordinary snack packs airlines provide. Airlines should be encouraged to provide them, or, build more toilets!

I’ve flown on hundreds of flights and NEVER seen a passenger with a bad reaction to peanuts being eaten on board. What a crock of democrat.

I recall lots of pb&js in school also. I think it was because the nuns forbade us from dropping over dead.

If peanuts are banned, will they search all passengers for this ‘controlled substance’? What is to stop some one from opening a bag on the plane and munching away?

BTW. PB with dill pickle slices is awesomely good on a toasted sammitch.

Tried that as a kid on a bet, and still make them today.

Sounds weird but its a good combo

Does ANYONE recall Suzy Durkins falling over because Calvin or Hobbes where enjoying a peanut based snack?

Some folks are allergic to life, but they were never close to me I suppose.

I sure can't recall their names.

I’m allergic to liberals... would they consider banning them on all flights?

they shouldn’t mind... it’s greener not to fly. (I’m evil and don’t give a rats a$$ about being ‘green’)

This is nuts! No pun intended.

Like they really clean the cabin between flights! They’d have to ban peanuts for months and have cabins disinfected then strip search all passengers for peanut related snacks!

Nuts!
