SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police say a woman fatally shot one of two pit bulls that attacked her basset hound Saturday in South Los Angeles.
Officers were notified of the shooting at 835 W. Rosecrans Ave. at around 10:30 a.m. The woman said she and her dog were about to leave their apartment for a walk when the attack happened. She described how the two pit bulls suddenly appeared and lunged at the basset hound.
"She couldn't get the dogs off her dog. She went inside (her apartment) and got a gun," said LAPD Sgt. Philip Thompson. "She was defending her dogs."
The woman called police and was instructed to temporarily hand the gun over to arriving officers, which she did, police said. A large number of people surrounded the scene.

Right, because the dogs told their owner they were going out for a little while, and the owner tried to stop them from leaving, but those evil dogs found a way! Where the freaking heck was the owner of the dogs? How can you blame a dog for running loose with no owner in sight? Dogs will pack up and do what dogs do if left to fend for themselves. It is up to the owner to keep the dogs inside where they belong, as well as training and socializing them. If they aren’t inside with the family, they aren’t family pets, and the owner should be blamed. Countless experts have said that irresponsible ownership causes most dog attacks, regardless of the breed involved.
My friend had a pit bull, she said he was sweet, he growled at me everytime he saw me. She has 4 grandchildren and 7 nieces and nephews who spend time at her house and I asked her too get rid of him but she wouldn’t. Her son ran over him the other day and I was very relieved.
Too bad she didn’t get the second one...

In better neighborhoods, it is still a good idea to carry pepper spray at a minimum. In practice, I have seen a little “toot up the snoot” get a pit bull’s attention enough for him to release, where a gun would have been impractical.
Importantly, in a dog on dog confrontation, when people try to pull them apart they often get bit. Even if they don’t, they can’t usually separate them. When using pepper spray, you can both get safely close and give out the warning “pepper spray in 3...2...1!”, like “fire in the hole!”, as fair warning for the people involved.
The rules are very different for a dog on person attack. Spray first and ask questions later, because every moment is another chance for a grievous permanent injury.
As frightening as it sounds, if the first pepper spray doesn’t work in such a case, go for a heart stab with a knife.
Mighty big words. And I have no particular reason to doubt your sincerity. Whether or not such action by you would be justified is an open question.
If your "kid" is in the dog owner's fenced back yard without his permission and tossing rocks at the dog and gets bitten as a result, then you need to blister your kid's butt, rather than shooting the other man's dog.
If you trespass on his land and shoot his dog at a time when the dog is presenting no threat to you or anyone else, then the owner has a right to attack you.
Neither you nor the dog owner has the right to take the law into your own hands.
What is done at a time of actual attack or of imminent threat is one thing. What is done afterward for revenge is something else altogether.
Most breeds of dogs walk around my neighborhood all the time without packing up and eating another dog, or another person..
Certainly I dont condemn the breed , I am sure they are fine for what thy are bred for, but eating other species isnt a trait I particularly like.

I haven'y had a need to try it but I understand that a 50-50 solution of ammonia and water in a Windex-type of spray bottle will do the trick as well.

Most dogs would not, regardless of the breed. I wouldn’t dismiss a “friendly” breed as being friendly, though. Recently, I was attacked by a pack of dogs, and one was a black lab! The other dog that bit me was a dachshund, and the two others were mutts that were not pit bull-types, all of which were trying their best to rip a cat apart. The strays I encounter on my jogs range from pit bulls to chows to labs to even chihuahuas, and I never know which will be nice and which will be vicious. The most vicious dog I have so far encountered was a black lab mix, and he was downright scary. My dog (pit bull-type) goes with me on jogs and she is never aggressive towards other dogs we run across. I put her in a down-stay and deal with the strays myself. She knows who the boss is.
A dog left to its own devices is a potential danger, no matter the breed. Pit bulls are the most popular dog right now, so they are seen more often than others (running loose in bad neighborhoods, that is).

They were not bred to eat other species. They were bred as a multi-purpose farm dog, starting with gripping bulls for slaughter and moving on to dog fighting when bull-baiting was outlawed, and past that they were used as ratters, work dogs, and family pets by the pioneers that settled in this country. During the time that they were bred to fight other dogs, they were also bred to be capable of determining the difference between a dog and a person, so that in the pit, no handler would get bitten while handling the dogs in mid-fight. If we are willing to admit that genetics and breeding plays a part in the temperament of a dog, we must be willing to include all aspects of this, not just the ones that make the dog look bad.
Dogs are individuals, though, and each is capable of something different. Not all of them will fit the standard, just as not all “nice” breeds are nice, and not all pit bulls want to kill other dogs. There are several breeds unrelated to pit bulls that can be dog aggressive, as well as many dogs not in these categories that simply are dog aggressive for no known reason. It’s up to the owner of the dog to ensure the dog is socialized, trained, and securely kept to avoid incidents such as this one. If a dog is running loose, you can assume the owner is failing the dog in more ways than what can be seen.
Yes, unfortunately, all new firearms sales of handguns must be registered in CA and they are trying to pass a law that requires long guns to be registered also. A pretty crappy state to live in, especially when it used to be so gun friendly in my youth, not now however.
I apologize for the confusion. I was speaking in terms of an attack by a dog upon my child while in public or while upon my own property. I don’t permit my children to trespass upon the property of others.

This is very true. Of the 4 bassets I have had, only one would have stuck around for a fight. But he had spent some time on the street before we adopted him, so he had some survival instinct. The others would be so shocked they would roll over and submit.
Now, the chihuahua we have would tussle to his death. I really don’t think he has a brain...
