Monaco's Prince Albert FINALLY to settle down as he proposes to girlfriend Charlene
Daily Mail ^ | 3:28 PM on 23rd June 2010 | Unknown

If she takes up swimming again, she won't be able to wear her engagement ring in the pool - she'd surely sink.

Prince Albert of Monaco has proposed to South African former swimmer Charlene Wittstock - giving her a ring that more than makes up for his reputation as an eternal playboy.

The royal palace said in a statement that the engagement was announced today between the 52-year-old prince and 32-year-old Wittstock.

Charlene herself is a former Olympian swimmer, not bad.

One of the favorite kid pranks in my day was to phone the tobacco store and ask, “Do you have Prince Albert in a can?”

She is classy and no major scandals and former Olympian. It’s a good choice for Albert considering the pasts of many of the princess consorts.

IIRC, it had to do with his wife; she died or went insane or something.

Here’s hoping that Caroline doesn’t cause trouble. Princess Antoinette caused trouble for Grace and I imagine that Caroline won’t like being demoted from being First Lady of Monaco.

Thanks. I didn’t know about that part of the story. Is she still alive?

BTW, I was disappointed to learn that Albert has TWO known illegitimate children by 2 different mothers. Can’t those Grimaldis curtail themselves? Are any of the children of his sisters legitimate?

I remember all the hoopla about the Kelly - Grimaldi nuptials. They even allowed us to listen to the radio broadcast in school the day of the wedding. And when those 3 children were born, they were on the covers of every magazine. They all have turned out to be a disapointment.

Here’s her wiki page:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Antoinette,_Baroness_of_Massy

I don’t know how to put this, but I think it’s because Grace was so obsessed with image and looking like the perfect mother, that it likely messed up her kids pretty badly. This is why I am leery about people who act for a living. She wanted to be known as the ‘perfect mother’ and worried about her image all the time, while whining about her life.

“Are any of the children of his sisters legitimate?”

I think her children by her royal husbands are and those of Stefano’s. I think Caroline is a completely hypocrite.

“They all have turned out to be a disapointment”

Grace didn’t discipline any of them. She spoiled them and let them run their own lives as children. I mean, they lived in a huge palace, in the wealthiest country on earth, and lived near Paris and all the enjoyments that it had to offer. But then, like most actresses, Grace lived in a fairytale.

My goodness — Antoinette was a true crazy aunt in the attic. No wonder Grace had problems in Monaco. It’s a shame, however, how libertine her children turned out. Methinks they would have fared better had they been raised in Philadelphia.

HSH Prince Albert II and Miss Charlene Wittstock became engaged in Monaco today afyter a long and tortuous romance.

Charlene, a South African former Olympic swimmer bears some resemblance to Albert's mother, the late Grace Kelly, the American actress. This resemblance has been cultivated and encouraged ina a somewhat bizarre fashion.

Charlene's style is not really classic, just expensive, with a touch of punk.

Your comments are always welcome.

I thought the line of succession in Monoco, for it to retain its principality, had to be from son to son. IIRC, the principality status ended if there were no male heirs?

Charlene is very beautiful in her own right. It will be fun to watch the wedding. I remember when Grace Kelly married Prince Ranier it was the biggest story and every little girl in the US wanted to be Grace Kelly.

Caroline’s first marriage to playboy Philippe Junot was annuled. Her second marriage to Stefano Casiraghi, an Italian “businessman”, ended with his untimely death in a suspicious boating accident They had two boys. Andrea and Pierre. She then took up with French actor Vincent Lyndon, then married the very rich, divorced, and very dissipated and drunk, Prince Ernst August of Hanover. He dumped her for a younger model, but they are not divorced. They have one daughter.

Stephanie married her trainer, then divorced him and took up with a circus performer. She jad children with a few different men, some legitimate, ssome illig.

Eumpr has it that the two illigiti, ate children of Albert’s were a cover story to make him appear more manly.Unmarried at 52 is not the greatest recommendation.

FWIW Charlene is Protestant and must convert to RC to marry Albert.

Thanks for the ping. In one of the photos up above on the thread she looks a lot like Prince Harry’s South African girlfriend although a bit older of course!

I must say that HRH Prince Albert II does NOT look to be 50-something... Must be all that money, and no stress that keeps them looking young.

My husband went to summer camp with Prince Albert, here in America. They swam and fenced together, and just had a good time without any big fuss about royalty. They called him "Albie", and he was from all accounts, just one of the guys.

I had the opportunity to meet the prince and one of his Philadelphia cousins a few years ago at a camp reunion event. He was very nice, somewhat shy, and occasionally stuttered. I enjoyed meeting him.

I don't care for the fact that he created out-of-wedlock children, and I don't think there should have been a lot of fuss over whether he'd support them. It seems to me these things could have been dealt with privately. Still, his private life seems less chaotic than either of his sisters.

I wish him and Charlene all happiness.

All this time I figured he swung the other way. OTOH, from the look of his fiancé, she may have swung him back. Or, on second glance, maybe the short hair and big face... well, never mind... Thanks Cincinna. There's a treaty (early 20th c) between France and Monaco -- if the male line of the house of di Grimaldi dies out, the Principality reverts to France.

Thanks for your personal recollections of Albert.

Albert is a graduate of Amhurst College in Mass with a BA in Political Science. He also has a graduate degree in business and management from a top University in England.

I had the privilege of meeting Albert many times, in the US and in Monaco. He is exactly as you described. He speaks perfect English with no accent, and is very nice, friendly and down to earth. When among Americans he just seems one of us.

He has been active in Olympic sports his whole life as were his grandfather Kelly and his uncle Jack Kelly. He is still the grandson of an Irishman from Philly, who started as a bricklayer. His mother, Grace Kelly, always kept up ties close with Albert’s Kelly cousins in Philly.
