'Knight And Day' Disappoints With $3.8M
Deadline Hollywood Daily ^ | June 24, 2010 | Nikki Finke

Posted on 06/26/2010 7:15:48 AM PDT by C19fan

This is a failing grade for the 20th Century Fox film starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz on the first day of what will be its 5-day opening weekend. According to rival studios, a figure of $5+M would have been hopeful. But Fox announced just now that Knight and Day did only a nervous $3.8M. (Rival studios had it at $3.6M this morning "apparently not knowing that there was a data feed problem with one of the big circuits", Fox tells me.) "It's normally 5-times Wednesday for 5 days, but that's a number below even the most evil estimates," one rival studio exec emails me.

Go away Maverick and take Diaz along with you.

Well, considering I have not even heard of this movie at all it is no surprise it is flopping. Have they even advertised it at all???

My impression from reviews and the previews is the movie is good and Cruise may have stopped boring people and gotten back to entertaining.

Big HOWEVER: from talking to my wife, daughter and others they all say they “don’t like Tom Cruise” and even though he looks young they all say he is “too old” for Cameron Diaz.

He has alienated a lot of people.

I saw the preview and it looked pretty good. I am not a movie buff but the trailer made me want to see it.

I guess Cruise and Diaz don’t have the star power they used to have.

I have seen Maverick and Dipsy making a lot of “viral” type appearances on TV.

When I saw the ads/trailer, I thought it looked good and wanted to see it...even though I can’t stand Tom Cruise and never could (horrible actor IMO). But the review said it started out strong and then quickly became weighed down and drawn out. Too bad. Won’t be seeing it - I hate tedious movies.

Have they even advertised it at all???

Plenty of TV ads, at least here in Mid-Missouri.
I suspect folks are just a bit tired of Cruise.

Guess contractual photo ops with Stepford Katie didn’t hype the movie enough. ;)

I think word of mouth travels a lot faster these days with email, Twitter, Facebook, blogs so if it is a stinker nobody wastes their money. Hollywood has to be a lot smarter these days than creating hype and good 2 minute trailers. Hollywood has to produce a good product (which is rare these days) in order for people to spend money.

I think it’s all the baggage they carry. Loud mouth activists, scientology nut, worn out their welcome, relationship-challenged, Bush-haters, insane couch-jumper... I think it just wears on the public after a while, and why go see a movie of people who rag on “corporations,” yet benefit from corporations and live so lavishly in our faces, yet chastise the rest of us for “raping” the rest of the world. I couldn’t be happier that their little movie is flopping. Yeah, it looks cool on the previews, but I’ll wait until it’s in the $3.00 bin before I ever see it.

Agreed. The trailer looks good but Cruise has turned off many of his fans because of his outlandish comments, beliefs and behaviors. Cruise, at 48, is only 10 years older than 38 year old Diaz so there’s not that much of an age difference. Maybe people don’t want to believe she’s pushing 40.

I’d watch a Tom Cruise film - but not one with Diaz in.

$3.8M

At that rate, it will probably be on Netflix in a couple of months.

I can wait.

Heard good reviews from conservative reviewers.

If not liking actors inhibits your viewing, fine.

Might be worth a reminder. The Tom Cruise Scientology video. Five and a half million views. Lots of lost ticket sales there.

Cruise is 47, Diaz is 37, a ten year difference, which is not such a big difference at that age.
