I loved the Beatles also. But I’d hope you had an adult in your life that mentioned that the drug mentality was unhappy, and that running to India searching for gurus was foolish.
I remember actually discussing the Beatles with one son, who loved their music. We spent some time talking about that John Lennon had no decent parents and spent time casting about for something to believe in, but drugs, eastern religions and adultery were emotional dead ends.
This does not negate muscial genius, and we also talked about how people will give such people a “pass”- and how that can lead to destruction.
I always searched for teachable moments in the popular culture. The trick to doing it is to not make it a lecture, but a true moment of sharing.
I didn’t need an adult to tell me this. I already knew that this was crazy. I was, and still am, a devout Catholic and thought that going to gurus was depressing. Maybe because I’m an Anglo-file may have colored my thinking.
