Vanity: Anything Negative About Joining the Peace Corps?

There are many websites that promote joining the Peace Corps. A family member has asked me to research the subject and help her reach a decision about joining. I have found only a few sites with cautionary comments. I would like FReepers to help me balance the information with any negative feedback available.

As a former federal agent, I can tell you that you will never be a federal agent if you were a member of the peace corps. This was in 1990, dont know about now.

My wife’s cousin (rich lib parents, lib cousin, from Denver area) graduated from Duke 3 years ago in theater, and like most people with worthless degrees, she had to find something to do. She joined the Peace Corps, was supported by her parents for a few years of traveling and doing whatever those people do, and is now back in the States, jobless, and still being supported by her parents.

A Duke education (theater degree) and the Peace Corps are her resume, and she can’t get an interview at the local Starbucks. So, like all rich libs, what do you suppose she’s going to do? You got it, graduate school for some other worthless degree.

Not sure if that helps, but I needed to get it off my chest and took the opportunity to do so. ;

1. As a boy, my dad’s secretary was a total bombshell..hourglass figure, with all of the sand at the top. She felt bad about having it so good in a ritzy tourist town, and went to Central African Republic to help folks. Soon we received photos that showed, lo and behold, that the dictator and his cadre had taken a liking to her.

She disappeared, and we never saw her again.

2. My lab partner went to Ghana. She, too, was pretty. They didn’t have running water where she was, and so they’d bath at a local river. When she gave off signs of going to the river, the men would call out joyously to one another, alerting the mensfolk to the impending event.

As she bathed, they —the people she was helping— would masturbate, also eagerly calling to her to look before the instant of their final satisfaction.

They wanted to share, you know?

HAVE FUN!

Having bene in third world countries, I can note the natives make fun of peace corp people.

The men are for robbing. They women are gullible and easy lays.

If they want to change the world for the better, join the military. Like it or not, real peace is imposed at the barrel of a rifle in the third world.

The Peace Corps/Agent problem:

As an agent, you might come into contact with people who suspect the agent. If they dig deep enough, they might confirm the past Peace Corps membership.

THEN, baddies would draw a mental association between the two roles; “Peace Corps is merely a cover for agents of the Great Satan....”

For baddies, they would understand this cover, because it’s so natural that the Peace Corps idiots would live around Caudillos or African blood diamond guys, etc.

So the first thing they’d do is go around killing Peace Corps people for being “spies”....

This is also why some baddies like to zap liberal photoJournalists, etc —the job really seems a naturally cover for SF operators, spooks, etc.

And in fact that cover is sometimes used.

agree with the above comments about govt service

Peace Corp service means you wont be able to work in some govt agencies or for contractors that do certain work requiring security clearance

Think about what the world thinks of obama and the USA under obama, and think about whether you want to be a walking poster child for all that

If serving the poor abroad appeals to the heart, check out some of the MANY nongovt organizations including religious missions and organizations that are respected and really do fine work, like World Vision, Catholic Relief, medical groups, missions, and groups that work in many many schools and orphanages and serve under no political agenda

A former friend of mine graduated from a prestigious military college and, instead of taking a commission in one of our armed services in the 60’s, he joined the “Peace Corps”. I never could understand his actions, never asked. He is a flaming liberal and, other than seeing his name on high school alumni e-mails, he is history to me.

Disease, dysentary, violence (especially for women), bugs, sleeping outside, muggy crappy weather.

There is no room service. It ain’t vacation. It’s work. And it accomplishes little.

Tell her to join the military.

As a recovering ex-hippie, I will admit that I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand from 1977-1979. It was, in a way, the “hardest job” I could do at the time. I came back with a Thai wife and a whole different outlook on life. I hobnobbed with the farmers and we called BS on the government functionaries and so forth. I do believe I made friends and got a wee bit of respect, from high placed supporters of the King of Thailand to common Thai farmers. The latter are my favorites. :)

The peace corps was created for those without the stones to join the military.

I’d advise the youngster to really serve the country or stay out of the conversation. But that’s just me.

Buddy of mine was talking to me about this the other day. He knew a couple of young women who joined the PC and ended up in Jamaica.

They are done with their service and despise anything and everything Jamaican. Said that the average person was not the least bit interested in helping themselves out or trying to improve their surroundings or life. They all wanted handouts, were lazy, filthy hated whites and acted as if the PC workers owed them.

Have no idea what kind of treatment they received from the Jamaican men so I've no comment. They also said it was like living in a sewer 24-7.

almost forgot, a good friend who was a Colonel with the US Army met any number of females serving with the PC in South America.

He'd meet these girls when they'd approach his medical site and begged for medicine to clean out the worms they were suffering from. Also asked for other types of medicine and supplies they desperately needed for themselves.

He had heard stories of some of these girls being told to exchange “ favors “ for treatment and supplies. Horrible.

Don’t know a whole lot about the Peace Corps. My cousin was tortured, raped and murdered while serving in Africa. The world is not a happy place. I feel like my cousin was a sitting duck.

If she wants to serve the poor and/or abused, why not help out organizations serving in the US? We have so many girls and women from Central and South America being used and abused by human smugglers.

There are plenty of private, world-wide charitable organizations (World Vision, Habitat for Humanity, Feed the Children, Doctors Without Borders, Smile, etc., etc., and some often faith-based or dominated by people of faith) that perform every kind of humanitarian and development assistance you can imagine. You don’t need to join a politically organized, government organized outfit to “give back”, anywhere around the world.

Don’t worry, no matter HOW you help others, those you help will know YOU are an American and will see you as a face for your country. The “Peace Corps” name tag is not required.

My brother the "save the whales" kind ,, joined the PC,,, stayed a year and said he was tired of bugs and sponge baths. I used to send him care packages. He considered a bag of potato chips a gift from GOD!

He thought this service would give him a leg up in being hired with oceanography degree in hand.

It did not,, he eventual became a bar tender, then restaurant manager...

There are many websites that promote joining the Peace Corps. A family member has asked me to research the subject and help her reach a decision about joining. I have found only a few sites with cautionary comments. I would like FReepers to help me balance the information with any negative feedback available.

After having lived and worked outside the United States over a period of years, I applied to the Peace Corps. I was waiting for my phone interview. A week or so later I got a Peace Corps post card (I still have it somewhere) from the interviewer saying she had tried to contact me but "had gotten no responds." Later, when she had gotten in touch with me, I saw that everything I thought after seeing "no responds" was true (ignorant, racist, black woman safe in a quasi-government post). She asked me if I thought I could live in a fishbowl environment and under less than optimal conditions? I asked her to explain. She said "Having everybody always watching you, the foreigner." I asked, "You mean like when I lived in the Dominican Republic with a Dominican family for about a year in a small house with three different families, mice, rats, and chickens, where a high school student and a high school teacher had to reach their bedroom by going through mine, where the living room had been turned into a small boutique, and where there was only a single stream of cold water in the bathroom to bathe with?"

She went on to ask me about my visits to Haiti. I told her I found the Dominicans much easier to deal with than the Haitians. She pounced on that, her questions suggesting that it was because Haitians were black and Dominicans were white (which showed me she didn't know anything about the Dominican Republic) and I was white. I told her that in the DR the little kids would come up and ask for a penny. In Haiti, they would demand a dollar. In the DR I felt at home because I spoke Spanish fluently and could deal with anyone about anything. In Haiti, I couldn't speak French or patois and was reduced to sign language (like the prostitutes who would come up alongside saying "fucky fucky two dollah, two dollah" making hand gestures with forefinger and closed fist, though the higher class prostitutes that approached foreigners in the parks were multilingual).

I decided after the phone call with that incredibly ignorant, racist, politically correct woman not to pursue it any farther. As others have said on this thread, there are many private, charitable organizations that do really wonderful work all over the world that would be a better place to serve than the Peace Corps.

My niece with a BS in Biology from great name university left a high paying job here to join the Peace Corps. She was assigned to the Philippines. She loved it. She got to do an extensive amount of traveling and scuba diving. She even signed up for extended time there. She fell in love with a co worker and has moved back with him. Now she works as a waitress because she hasn’t been able to find a job in her field of study, lives in her boyfriend’s family’s home and still has tons of debt in student loans.
