OK so America is agog. Agog I say! At the amazing new American technological marvel, the Apple iPhone 4.
Except, is the phone entirely manufactured... in Asia?
I won’t buy Apple products.
Your posting history tells me you’re just stirring the pot.
The box they pack them in, but then the packing is probably done by illegals.
Most of all the software is done in the U.S.. Supposedly most of the circuit design was done here but not as much as before. Some ICs may be made in America. Some of the IC fabrication factory/foundry equipment is still made in America.
A lot was all in Calif but it keeps being driven out. Semiconductor manufacturing “ain’t” as clean as people think.
No, unless by “stirring the pot” you mean am I pointing out that as a nation, we are surrendering every single thing which made us great.
In which case, yes. I am.
So. Is the iPhone manufactured in Asia?
Very few things are manufactured here. That isn’t Apple’s fault. It’s our government’s fault. And I am NO Apple fanboy for sure.
So what computers are completely manufactured in the USA? Why single out Apple?
Everything is made in Asia. All of them.
But you’re grinding an ax with Apple.
As long as the product performs as advertised ... who cares? We live in a Global economy ... cars with foreign names, and foreign sponsors are made in the US. Products like batteries are made in China and other countries and are sold in the US and nobody cares.
I don’t care were a product is produced, as long as it works and sells at a reasonable price.
Yes it is. Foxconn (Taiwanese company with all factories in Guangzhou, China) and their supply chain in China provide all the parts.
Of course, they’re still a bit-player in the phone market so they don’t have the big, established manufacturing base of the bigger players.
I think the PR is all produced stateside.
They are pretty lib and rapist and fraud Gore on the board is BS. I give Jobs credit for his business skills and for deciding to not allow porn on new iPad or the phone (??).
I also am weary of Apple evangelists. Rush’s obsession with Apple’s crap is also annoying. I loathe Google, Microsoft is no better either and is probably more lib than Apple.
I couldn't care less about it.
But Apple products are “Designed By Apple in Cupertino”....lol
Oh. I see the confusion.
My apologies. Actually no I’m not at all on a bash-Apple crusade.
I’m on a bash-Outsourcing crusade. :D
I’m grinding an axe (that’s a neat phrase) against outsourcing American jobs!!
I’m just using Apple as this example.
I sort of like the iPhone. But if it’s made in Asia, it’s hardly an American product. No harm in pointing out the truth - it that’s where it’s made. No sense ignoring that fact. We really need to talk about that emperor, over there wearing no clothes.
We are in this poster’s opinion (way) beyond the point where we needed to wake up, before our nation simply dissolves for lack of any substance.
We’re now moving out beyond that point by the day, and now it’s happening right in front of our eyes.
You suppose Obama would have been elected, if Americans had jobs making meaningful, hi-tech products like we once did?
I think not.
Obama was elected, because all those innovative Americans who used to make cool stuff, are out of work.
Looking for someone to blame.
Well, Obama is giving them someone to blame! “Corporations”.
Problem is, our side isn’t offering anything better. We’ve been all for sending jobs out of the country. Thus, the last election!
Americans need jobs.
Not economic theory. Not tax policies.
JOBS.
Thanks for your comments.
Apple is an American Company with products (like many other companies) are made overseas for manufacturing costs. Microsoft does the SAME thing.
A better question is, Is the United States (since Nov 2008) an American country?
The Dell line of high-performance computer systems includes Dimension and OptiPlex desktop computers, Latitude and Inspiron notebook computers, PowerEdge servers, PowerApp server appliances, Dell Precision workstation products and PowerVault storage products. The company’s computers are manufactured one at a time, as ordered, at facilities in Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; Eldorado do Sul, Brazil; Limerick, Ireland; Penang, Malaysia; and Xiamen, China.
You should just ask what electronic tech devices are made in the USA. You are looking for controversy and will get it.
How many TVs are American made?
I was talking about batteries in general. You know ... D cells, A cells etc.
I bought a Dell notebook from a well known merchant.
It came shipped in the original sealed, Chinese factory box... with a mailing label and po, simply stuck to the outside of the box.
Let me post a disclaimer.
It was a while ago, and I also bought an Acer.
Both were made in China, and at least one came in the original sealed Chinese box. Could have been the Acer, I suppose. Just in case my memory isn’t 100% clear.
But they’re both Chinese-made.
Late to the party? This is common knowledge.
It pays taxes based on being here.
So if it’s common knowledge, why do we studiously avoid talking about it?...
It seems we are talking about it.
Starting to sound like a Seinfeld episode...a conversation about a conversation that is never a conversation...
Yes, most Dells are ‘assembled’ in the U.S. but you would be hard-pressed to find a single component that was manufactured in the U.S. Almost all (if not all) computer components are manufactured in PRC (People’s Republic of China), Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, etc. We do still make quite a few chips here but not many electronics.
I was surprised to find that many of the Taiwanese companies outsource the actual manufacture to the PRC. I always thought they hated each other but I guess business is business.
If we want America to become the default manufacturer for e.g. Apple hardware, then America must reduce its internal barriers to wealth production. It must compete.
But that's not easy. Competing is hard. It's far easier politically to forget about wealth-production, and to impose tariffs and subsidies.
Tariffs and subsidies practically force Americans to buy expensive crud from feather-bedded domestic suppliers rather than cheap stuff that works from Asia. The result is that everybody gets poorer - but at least no voters had to compete in the real world.
The solution to outsourcing is either to compete, or to recognise that you can't compete and so move into another field of endeavour. In this case: moving into software rather than hardware.
But using governmental fiat and protectionism to stop outsourcing is not a solution: it is sheer wealth-destruction: the transformation of American industry into a welfare state. It would be disastrous.
Hope this was helpful.
Apple is no different from any other company. Nobody actually makes things in America anymore, ESPECIALLY electronics. Even Intel is slowly building more production capacity outside of the US.
Apple has “designed in California” on their products, but that means squat to me.
“It pays taxes based on being here.”

So then Apple, is different from Cosco (China Ocean Shipping group), in that way at least...

Sort of.
Well, when Agog meets Gog you know the End Times are nigh!
So you’ll need some Grog!

My friend needs a new PC, and I’m a Mac guy, so know little about PC’s.
But I’ve heard about Dell, so I googled them...did you know they DELIBERATELY concealed faulty motherboards from millions of their customers?
There’s a class-action lawsuit going on right now against them, and subpoenaed emails indicate they knoew the motherboards were leaking, yet they told their staffers to deny such, and lie about it.
So..I need to find a good PC to tell her to buy, but I don’t really knwo the market enough.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Ed
Here in Oregon the vaunted silicon chip factories are all shutting down and being moved overseas, putting THOUSANDS upon thousands of Oregonians out of work.
I’m no nativist, but God help me, I simply cannot understand why we, as a nation, allow that. We are destroying our own middle-class base.

Americans want cheap . Look at Walmart’s success .
Sigh...yup.
I learned better, though, ,when I realized years ago that 90% of everything I bought at Wal-Mart breaks down or falls apart within several months.
Everything...toasters, lamps, bookcases, hoses (with BRASS fittings!) mirrors, calculators, everything, it all fell apart/broke within six months of purchase.
Sure, they always replaced said articles, but it was still a hassle.
I only own two Wal-Mart things that have lasted for any amount of time...one, a Magnavox 21” TV that I bought ten years ago that has lasted for all those years, and a French coffee press I got for $9 that has brewed countless thousands of cups of Java.

I cannot suggest a brand to buy (except a Mac), but If it's a laptop, I would say to avoid HP. My HP laptop overheats even with the fan racing on high speed. And then it just dies. I have to let it cool down before it will start up again. And then it complains that it was not shut down properly.
Does it matter any more? The Boeing 777 and 787 are made up of parts from all over the world. Its cheaper to build things overseas. Blame the unions. Ironically, lots of Airbus parts are made in the USA
Thanks, Stripes, I’ll take that advice.
Happy 4th!
Ed
PLEASE NOTE, if you post a thread on APPLE, iPHONES, iPAD, or Macs, and wish to notify the Apple/Mac,iPhone,iPad list, please have the courtesy to Ping me, so that I may ping the list. Certain anti-Apple persons, notably, for-q-clinton, PugetSoundSoldier, and a few others are deliberately NOT pinging me to their negative, anti-Apple threads... for reasons of their own.

If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
Microsoft PCs are made in the good old USA! /sarc
Name a cell phone that IS manufactured in the United States.
The iPhone is manufactured in Asia.
The iPhones are designed in California, USA, by a California, USA, company... the processor they use is designed by a USA company... and Apple is traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange and it is incorporated in California, which, the last time I check (that could change) is still one of the fifty United States.
The last five Dell computers I installed for clients were manufactured in Asia... as were the last three HPs.
Your point is merely contentious to be contentious... FUD.
NO!!!! !!!!!!! the company in which the “sex poodle” sits on the board makes there products in China and the batteries cause and enviromental problem
Check the net ...You can find similar complaints about any maker’s laptop . All made in China with pretty much the same innards .
We don't... it's a talking point that frequently brought up... and frequently shot down for the same reasons. There is no other game to play... you want electronics manufactured, you go to Asia.
All laptops I have owned, Dell, HP, averatec, and others have all had that issue come up. A mac is not immune to it either. It's mostly fuzz from clothing and bed linens.
Actually, even a lot of the "assembly" is outsourced now... that's why they no longer ship right away... It's assembled in China and you have to wait for your assembled computer to arrive on the next shipment... to be shipped to you. American labor piece work is too expensive... so they do "just in time" shipping on those too. One of my client's ordered two Dell Dimensions in January... custom configured with extra RAM... It could not be shipped for two weeks. A week into the order, he decided to upgrade the hard drives on both machines so we called Dell to change the work order. We were told our upgraded machines would ship in two weeks. I asked why, Couldn't they just change the work order and ship on the original schedule? I was told both of our original machines had already shipped from China and they would have to ship another two with upgraded hard drives. BOING!
