WA: Balloons filled with welding gas explode in pickup on I-405
KING TV Seattle ^ | 7/4/2010

Posted on 07/04/2010 11:35:40 AM PDT by llevrok

KIRKLAND, Wash. - Homemade fireworks caused an explosion inside a vehicle on Interstate 405 in Kirkland on Saturday.

The Washington State Patrol says a man filled some balloons with welding gas - a combination of oxygen and acetylene gas - which is normally stored in steel cylinders.

They rubbed together, causing static electricity, and exploded. Troopers say the blast blew out the back window of the pickup truck.

They say the man, woman and 3-year-old girl in the vehicle are lucky they were not injured or even killed in the blast.

Talk about Industrial Strength Stupid...

As an aside if one fills a few balloons with this mixture, ties them to a stake, and shoots them with tracer rounds the result is rather impressive.

Just setting up this stunt could get a guy killed.

Here’s a fun one:
Fill a plastic soda bottle with gasoline.
Take small round candle, (or any kind for that matter)
place the lit candle in a small cardboard box with the top “vented”.
Place the bottle on top of box.
Place away from your person or others.
Ventilate bottle with rifle round of choice.
Makes for a BIG flash fire.
Oh yea, place away from flammable objects........
Happy Fourth.

We used mondo trash bags, inflated w/ oxy/acetylene. Taped a long lit cigarette to it at the last moment, and set them adrift across the lake (winds were favorable, of course!)

Big bad-a-boom! Shockingly big.

The other time, we filled an inverted galvanized trash can that had been pre-wired with a spark ignitor from a gas grill.

They still remember that one: “Hooooooly sh!!!!t!!” as it took off for the treetops; wasn’t much good after re-entry...

I saw a dude take a large party balloon fill it with a mixture of acetylene and o2 . He took a cigarette lighter and despite our warnings lit it. He had no hair on his arms ,face, and the front of his head and he was smoking. Big pop and bright light.

I have a friend on the “no fly” list because of doing something like this when he was a teenager.

What the article doesn’t say is why did the guy fill those tanks? Was he preparting a bomb for the party later and it exploded prematurely?

What we used to do as kids was poke a small hole in the bottom of a tin can and insert a firecracker. Put some water in a can that’s a little bit larger and put the smaller can inside..firecracker up, of course. When it explodes you’ll be surprised at how high the can will go.

After WW-2 we used to buy weather baloons at the Surplus store, fill them with oxygen/acetylene, put a long fuse on them and release them at dusk at evening rush hour and blow out a lot of windows when it went off at about 10,000’.

Even luckier they weren’t transiting a tunnel when this went off. That would’ve been quite the 4th-of-July sparkler.

The other time, we filled []an inverted galvanized trash can [w/ oxy/acetylene] that had been pre-wired with a spark ignitor from a gas grill.

We used to fill metal 16 oz food cans with oxy/acetylene mixture, set them into a pan filled with water and had a hole in the top, stick a long fuse into the hole. Light that bugger and run and get behind a tree trunk. Those cans flew over 100 feet straight up.

Basically, that’s a fuel-air bomb.

The following contains a possible ethnic slur, but consider where I’m from and the times described: in the 1960’s, my neighbor made a “Polish cannon” - which was 3 or 4 beer cans (how to make one is described on the ‘Net). Very loud, and cheap!

What we used to do is put some water in a faygo pop bottle.

(I dont know why but they worked the best)

Then you dump in some carbide and cap it. Throw that somebitch.

The pressure builds and them you shoot it with a BB gun ..PaaBoom!

Throw it in the fire for pyrotechnic effect.

Then the ultimate was dump a handful down a muskrat hole and follow with a bucket of water.

Touch that off with a lit rag on the end of a stick.
Holy Carp! It will shoot a fire column 15 feet up and the ground will heave a foot LoL

Yeah we were goofy

Homeland Security would have gone slap crazy about the gang I grew up with, we did some serious chemistry experiments. My high school chemistry teacher said that if there was a market for things that smelled bad and made loud noises I would be rich, LOL. I had to resist the temptation to tell my grandson a lot of things that would get him in trouble now.

Oxidizers are wonderful things, fulminating compounds are even better!

I know it..

We used to make this Ammonium Iodide compound.

Its perfectly stable when wet as in a paste, but the stuff is so unstable when dried out that a fly landing on it will set it off.

They taught us how to make it in high school

You put a dab of that under the toilet seat lid LoL

Or we’d put it on the inside of a kitchen cabinet door and leave it open. Some one would slap the door closed and “bang” it would fly back open!
