A tiny swastika appears on my "URL window" when I'm on Freerepublic.
But now, there's a little red swastika inside a yellow circle with what sort of look like crosshairs when I visit Freerepublic.
Can someone please explain this to me, and perhaps tell me how to disable the stupid cartoon icon function overall? It's driving me nuts.
Thanks!!!
Weird, I have a little red, white and blue star icon. I’m too computer illiterate to help you though.
RWB star shows on mine.
What service provider are you using?
Clear your cache and restart explorer.
Nam Vet
Screensot or it didn’t happen.
Sounds to me like you’ve got some sort of politically-motivated malware, created to substitute swastikas for the favicon (the name for the little graphic websites can create to appear beside the URL window) on conservative websites.
Unless, that is, you’ve visited a site with the swastika favicon, in which case it might simply be a glitch. For some reason I have FreeRepublic’s favicon attached to one (and only one) webpage on my university’s server I frequently use, while the rest show the university’s favicon.
Agreed.......
Agreed. Screenshot it and post the pic.
I get the star, but have been using Firefox.
It’s a DHS classification Icon?
Bump for later review..
In the header section of the source HTML there's a pointer to a "shortcut icon" that the webdeveloper points to a small picture that he wants displayed next to the tab, or in the address bar, or in the shortcuts.
One of the other posters pointed out that you should be able to clear your cache, and have it fix it. He's likely right... although Firefox has always seemed a little flaky as to when it refreshes that icon.
I see their little white star icon. It sounds like you may have gone to a site that also put an icon in your computer that had the same name and over-rode the FR icon your browser uses.
Yep, especially the version just before 3.6.6. This used to happen to me all the time - not with swastikas, but with the damned "Politco" favicon. That thing would show up on all kinds of other sites. The only way to fix it - sometimes - was to delete the "infected" cookie. It's only happened once since upgrading to 3.6.6., and clearing the cache works to fix it.
I have IE8 and I have shifting icons all the time with all of the sites I visit. Right now when I have FR up there’s a hockey logo. Every now and then the star comes back. I think it’s just another one of Bill Gates’ many product flaws.
living here on such a strange planet i don’t even question such minor happenings as that....
All RWB star icons.
I got the star as well
Red, Cracker, and Blue on mine!
I get the red, white and blue star logo.
I see in the headers:
http://www.freerepublic.com/l/favicon.ico
Can you check the header content you are getting in IE 8?
Pics? Screenshot? Or you know the rule....
Thats a really good point. ;)
I had a peace symbol, until I clicked to post, then it turned to a white star with red and blue, which is usually what I have when on FR.
In Firefox, it is possible to turn off the display of this icon in the address bar, at least. Not sure about the bookmark list, and I have no idea if that’s possible in IE.
I suspect hacker involvement with the swastika icon appearing in place of the normal FR star icon, it may be something that was picked up from a moonbat site (since they hate FR).
Actually, I like having those little icons in the bookmark list, it makes it easier to find the ones I want.
"
I have the star, running Opera.
The best way to keep junk like this from recurring is to protect yourself.
Now, if you are using IE, you are kinda screwed.
You can get CCLEANER and have it clean up your temporary files. It will also clean up your registry. It works for both FIREFOX and IE.
Just go here to download CCLEANER. It’s free. http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/?tag=mncol
If you use FIREFOX, there are many addons that help.
GHOSTERY
TACO
BETTER PRIVACY
NOSCRIPT
PLUS with FIREFOX you can have FOXTAB (which puts all your tabs into a display with multiple options (I like the multi screen one) and COOLIRIS, which lets you views any type of IMAGES, ANYWHERE (on your hard drive, on google) and even searching for games, or videos. It puts the images in front of you like a wall of paintings that you can ‘sail’ past, forwards or backwards, zoom in/out, and has a PLAY mode where is will act as a SCREEN SAVER by displaying all images selected, full size, and with special effects if you choose, and the ‘count’ of images is only limited by how many are found in the ‘search’ (like in google. This could be millions of photos)
“I have IE8 and I have shifting icons all the time with all of the sites I visit. Right now when I have FR up theres a hockey logo.”
Yep...I had that problem with earlier versions, for a little while, but uninstalled and reinstaled latest version and its gone now...just a glich.
I have the same logo. Sounds like a hijacking.
Innerestin’.
And my typo is now preserved for posterity.
I’ve always had the white star on a red n’ blue background. Never seen FR do anything else.

There. Happy now.
>>> I use IE-8
Problem solved.
Who you callin’ a screensot? I’ve given up drinking in order to achieve sveltefulness for my vacation in September.
There are no good crackers or dey babies
IE8 is crap, use Mozilla or Chrome. IE has never handled favicons properly and it’s just a crap browser.
Hey, mine too. I'll not be doing the upgrade(?) to IE 8 anytime soon.
Post a screenshot of your browsing history, that may help figure out where it came from. :->
I was just concerned that FR was tagged as a "Nazi hate site" by my carrier (Verizon).
BTW, to the “IE sucks” techno-bigots, very helpful, super constructive. Don't know if I'd have ever resolved such a minor glitch without the information that Microsoft sucks, it's all Bill Gates’ fault, and a shareware browser is the only way to go. Silly ‘lil me. Ummm, I don't have firefox or mozilla, so “tech support” for them is sort of... irrelevant - like telling a stranded motorist that if he only had bought a car with fuel injection, he wouldn't have a vapor-locked carburetor in the middle of the desert. Not really germane to the problem at hand. But thanks anyway...
Ha!
+1 Win.
You are reading Mein Kampf and just need to close the window.
LOL
I actually downloaded Google Chrome today because IE was giving me too many fits. It was stopping Adobe updates, crashing constantly and generally slow loading any and everything.
Taking a bit to get used to and I hate change, but I hate incompetence even more. Must be why Obama is giving me the heebie jeebies.
Wow, a Harley rider using the word "germane." There is no telling what you can see on FreeRepublic.
;>)
Yesterday, I couldn’t even spell vokabullary, and now I got one...
Are you logged in?
Shouldn't that be 'german'? :)
Only if the vapor-locked car in question is an old Opel...
Yeah, I got it figured out. Thanks.
Some military units would require the person who uttered or used the word “Germane”, Germaine, or germain, even when refering to one of the untalented Jacksons, to by a round for the bar and tip the pole dancer $20. Unless of course he was riding a Harley look alike and hanging out at Starbucks
