Man kills self inside Valpo gun range

By Ken Kosky ken.kosky@nwi.com | Posted: Tuesday, July 13, 2010 4:00 pm

VALPARAISO | Valparaiso police said a 60-year-old Valparaiso man shot himself to death Tuesday afternoon inside the gun range at Blythe's Sport Shop, 2810 N. Calumet Ave.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus after the shooting for treatment of a gunshot wound to the head. He died a short time later, according to Porter County Coroner Bob Schulte.

Valparaiso police spokesman Sgt. Michael Grennes said the man was in the range test-firing a handgun belonging to Blythe's when he turned the gun on himself. He fired a single shot to the head, Grennes said. Grennes said the man obtained the gun by expressing interest in buying it.

Grennes said all indications are that the shooting was not an accident, that the man intentionally shot himself.

The shooting occurred about 12:20 p.m. Tuesday and the man was transported by Valparaiso Fire Department medics.

Yeah, why use your own gun when you can rent one?

The GunGrabbers are gonna have a field day with this one.

I know a small local range that had it happen twice within a short period. It makes me avoid ranges anymore.

What if you had a members only range? Would there be a good way of doing that? That would be cool to build a members only range

Remember, there are no “do overs” in suicide. Once it is done, its DONE. Then you’ll be facing the Almighty and will have to give account for everything you have done or said in your life.

That scenario is far more fearful for me than anything in this life.

I always check my six (for those unfamiliar with the term), it means beware of what is going on behind you when you are at the range. I keep a fully loaded pistol on me when I am shooting other firearms as some insurance in the event some guy decides to go postal when I am reloading my weapons on the range. Or in the event that someone tries to do a stick-up of me or others on the range in order to get weapons.

My local range would doesnt allow / strongly discourages a single person coming in and renting a gun all by him or herself anymore. Too many incidents like this.

Went to the L.A. gun club shooting range recently.

The neighborhood they were located in was better advertisement for “Hey, maybe I need a gun?” than anything else I have seen.

They had a standard policy that if you came to the range alone, they will NOT rent you a gun. I read the sign and immediately knew that it was to avoid this type of situation.

If a guy has his own gun, he doesn't need to rent yours, or come to your place of business to shoot himself. If a guy is coming in with a friend, he most likely isn't going to blow out his brains with the gun you rented to him.

Blythe's should adopt a similar policy. Keeps down on having to clean brains off plate glass windows.... brain leaves streaks!

Yeah. Generally any ranges that rent guns or let you try them out have these suicides. The problem is they make money selling guns so if they cut out people testing them - it hurts business. Not a fun business to be unless you can afford a really big operation.

Probably an old guy with no money and no hope. This economy is brutal on seniors or people nearing retirement.

Ranges that have had this occur usually discontinue their handgun rentals. That seems to be the most effective way of stopping this sort of thing from happening. The logic is sound - if someone already owns a gun, they can blow their brains out elsewhere.

The majority of these cases involve gun rentals - but not all (like that batshit-crazy woman who killed her own son at a range last year or so).

I understand. I get really spooked sometimes so I stopped going. Cowboys with 1911s and .44s who get sloppy. People not paying attention to gun safety.

The fear that some poor soul like this man wants to end it. The guy at the range said if you ever encounter it - don’t try to stop them.

Texas Thunder Range in San Antonio. Nice facility, WAAAYY too expensive, and you have to buy their indoor ammo - can’t bring in your own. At $20 -$23 a box for my .40, I opted to go back outside.

Elderly and Expendable

Posted By Tait Trussell On June 17, 2010

The Obama Administration and the President’s pals in Congress have been on a deliberate course to write off America’s senior citizens as a lost cause politically. This decision is based on an internal Democrat study indicating that seniors don’t trust Obama.

The Democrats, in fact, have stiffed the country’s seniors: ranging from multi-billion dollar cuts in Medicare [1] to driving physicians to drop seniors as patients by delaying [2] and cutting federal reimbursements to such medical specialists as cardiologists and oncologists, who treat the biggest killers of seniors–heart disease and cancer.

The disdain toward seniors has included cuts in home health care [3] and payments to hospitals to new taxes on medical devices [4] on which many seniors depend. Add to this: increases in the medicare tax [5] on some working seniors and cancellation of the traditional cost-of-living boost to Social Security checks [6] for 2010 and 2011.

During the stretched-out debate over the new health law, seniors continually heard that Medicare would be slashed by $500 billion. The final bill’s provisions included $132 billion chopped from Medicare Advantage, [7] the enhanced private version of Medicare in which 25 percent of seniors are enrolled....
