Apple affirms: no software fix for iPhone 4 antenna issue
engadget ^ | 7/16/10 | Darren Murph

In case it wasn't obvious enough from Apple's agitated response to our question during today's iPhone 4 Q&A session in Cupertino, there's no software fix in the pipeline for the antenna issues that are plaguing users today. A prior report in the New York Times seemed fairly confident that the troubles could (and would) be solved in the near term by a simple software update, but the company's own Scott Forstall called said report "patently false." So, there you have it -- the only thing that'll be fixed via software is how big your smallest bar of signal is. Beyond that, you'll need to grab some Duct tape, a free case or a white glove if you're looking to avoid attenuation entirely.

So they lied about the software patch which made AT&Ts network look worse?

I’m sure many of the Apple fanatics here will call Scott Forstall a liar and spreader of FUD...;)

No, I think that was a legitimate issue that was fixed through software. This is saying that the problem with the antenna cannot be fixed via a software update.

I don’t remember Apple ever saying it would be fixed through software, though.

Strange then, that I just heard on Fox, that Apple WOULD be supplying some kind of case that would fix the problem.

Maybe I am just hearing things, hmmmmmmmmmm. Just have to watch for this info again on FOX.

Lord, AT&T doesn't need any help to look bad. They are very capable in that regard. If the problem is with antenna placement then no amount of software fixes is going to work. You can't fix hardware with software, if they claim they can it's BS. I'm glad Apple isn't trying to BS their way out of the problem.

“No, I think that was a legitimate issue that was fixed through software.”

First Jobs said “you’re holding it wrong” then they said reception was fine it was just the bars were wrong. They pushed the software update to change the formula behind the bars. Didn’t effect the antenna problem but that was why it was released.

Interesting twist on the problem now. All of a sudden the software update wasn’t to fix the antenna problem and “you can’t fix hardware with software”.

Yep. First it was:

- There is no Antenna problem

Then it became:

- You’re holding it wrong

Which led to:

- It’s just a bar calculation error

Then it morphed to:

- A simple software fix

Which finally came out as:

- There is no problem, but here’s the way to solve the problem

But of course, for pointing out the final conclusion early in that month-long evolution, you and I are haters and evil and liars and stuff...;)

Nice to be proven right by Apple themselves. I won’t wait for any of the Macolytes to apologize, though - it’ll never happen because Steve said it would never happen.

When I upgrade from my iPhone 3G to a 4th gen, I’ll buy a case for it, just like I did for my 3G

You’ll get no respect if you do that.

Note that Apple admits the iPhone 4 drops more calls than previous versions, but the way Steve’s statement was worded was VERY careful, plenty of wiggle room:

It drops 1 out 100 more calls

The question, therefore, is now many calls did the iPhone 3GS drop? They’ve admitted it’s worse, but how much worse is the big question:

Did the 3GS drop 1 out of 100? If so, then the iPhone 4 is twice as bad.

Did the 3GS drop 1 out of 300? If so, then the iPhone 4 is 3 times as bad.

Did the 3GS drop 1 out of 1000? If so, then the iPhone 4 is 10 times as bad.

Note that Steve stated an absolute number (1 out of 100) rather than a percent increase in the number of drops (note it’s an increase, too - it’s worse). Usually that’s done when the absolute number is a lot better than the percent increase.

So, the question becomes - we know the iPhone 4 is worse in terms of calls dropped, as compared to the 3GS model. How much worse? That’s what is being hidden...

State of the art testing facility with 17 anechoic chambers costing $100 millions dollars manned by 18 PhD scierntists.

Pretty cool, huh?

And yet the problem still made it through QA because Jobs didn’t listen to a senior engineer.

Was this the one where he couldn’t get a WiFi connection? Or was that a different problem?
