Veteran Character Actor Gammon is one of a small number of celebrities that live in Ocala's horse country. The late Baseball owner George Steinbrunner, and Hollywood actors such as John Travolta and Kelly Preston, and Ocala natives Patrick O'Neal and Monte Markham are other celebrities in the area.

"With his weathered face and signature voice, Gammon was a scene stealer who often played second fiddle to A-list stars on film and TV. He played Don Johnson’s father on TV’s “Nash Bridges.” He played Charlie Sheen’s coach in “Major League.” He played pioneer Esco Swanger in “Cold Mountain,” which earned Renée Zellweger a Best Actress Oscar in 2004.
Among a long list of credits dating back to TV’s “Gunsmoke” in 1966, Gammon played a Korean War veteran on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and Steve Strange in the 1980 John Travolta smash “Urban Cowboy.”

I always enjoyed his acting. He had an easy-going way about him.

His first screen work was Cool Hand Luke playing the role Sleepy.

RIP James Gammon

I saw him in Major Leagues. In that movie he really looked like a baseball manager.

That guy could sure act.

Just the other day I was thinking of him and how he played off Wesley Snipes, who's "Willie Mays Hayes" roll was among the finest performances I have ever seen.

Good job Mr. Gammon, well done.

Man who didn't like James Gammon, outside of the Major League movies he was on “Nash Bridges” as Don Johnson's father and a great character actor in a lot of movies.
That guy was the real deal and I will miss him.
I actually do a pretty fair imitation of him
He will be missed.
