Anniversary of Apollo 11

20 July is the 41st anniversary of Apollo11 landing on the Moon.It was a great moment in American history. It's too bad our governments leaders decided that NASA abandon its mission to explore the unknown in favor of making the Islamic people "feel good about themselves.

Chappaquiddick happened the same night. Ted Kennedy was probably one of the few Americans not glued to a TV set.

Who remembers what they were doing at the time?
In those years I was a member of a private musical and twirling organization for youth, called, The Weldonians. The night before, we had been on an outing, marching in some parade, or performing somewhere with the Show Band unit.
A dozen of us had a sleep-over at one member’s house in Fremont, California, so that we could all be together to watch the TV reports and feedbacks of the landing.
It was an exciting time.

It was a great day. I stayed up way past my bedtime on a Sunday night. My, how things have changed.
Not to change the subject too much but, I give you the new face of NASA:
WAKE UP AMERICA!
Houston we have a problem...

I noticed several billboards with “RR” in the lower right corner on I-44 yesterday. The boards carried a quotation from the Gipper.

Missouri will be a key state if we are to win in 2012. Great news.

Yeah, if not for the Obama administration we'd be on course to repeat the Apollo 11 landing in time for the 60th anniversary.

Maybe private industry could do to sooner, cheaper and better?

Love that billboard. "Hope" should be changed to "Hype" and then it would be perfect.....

Here’s a link to full(?) mission audio. Last year they played it in real time 40 years to the second. Now you can listen to it at your leisure:

What were the very first words transmitted back from the surface of the Moon?

If you mean the first words spoken after the LM touched the moon, they would be “Contact light”

Arguably yes.
I’m looking for the first words spoken after the actual landing itself.
The four words between “Contact light” and Houston. Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has Landed.

“Capricorn One”. The second guy from the right, if you’ll recall, is everyone’s favorite convict and wife-killer, Orenthal James “OJ” Simpson.
Just a bit o’trvia for your day.

“Okay...engine stopped”
Close enough.
The first words after the actual landing, the words that let Houston know they had landed, were:
[drumroll]
“Cycle the Parker valve”
This was the main engine valve, cycling it stopped the engine. The first words were merely procedural, never intended to be of Historical Significance, and worse were effectively an advertisement for Parker-Hannifin. They have been purged from every recording of the event I have ever been able to find.
I only remember it because that valve was built in the cleanroom my dad worked in (although he didn’t assembly that particular valve, he did build the equivalent valve for subsequent missions)
Anyway, that’s FR’s Über-trivia for the day.
Thanks for playing...

OJ was in Capricorn One? I didn’t know that. That’s a pretty good piece of trivia too!

I was 6 years old and had special permission from my Mom & Dad to stay up late and watch Neil step off the LM. I remember afterwards running out to the front porch and looking up at the moon to see if I could see the Astronauts getting out and walking around.
