Girl Pop’s Lady Gaga Makeover (commentary on Gaga and feminism in modern music)
NY Times ^ | July 21, 2010 | JON CARAMANICA

Posted on 07/22/2010 1:58:55 PM PDT by a fool in paradise

...No one in recent pop memory has been a greater enemy to the authentic than Lady Gaga... Not long ago she was playing confessional piano music in tiny New York rooms...

Lady Gaga has become successful by adhering to the belief that there’s no inner truth to be advertised, or salvaged: all one can do is invent anew.

It wasn’t that long ago when artifice appeared to be on its last leg. In the mid-to-late-1990s female performers especially were in a confessional place, a movement captured and branded by Lilith Fair...

...About one-third of the original dates have been canceled, reflecting a soft concert market but also shifts in mainstream tastes...

...This new feminism is more about the opportunity to make choices than about any specific choice itself. And it’s freeing, this expansion of musical liberation into spaces visual as well as sonic, instinctual as well as intellectual, performed as well as lived.

By contrast Lilith in its prime — when it was a major summer tour — trafficked in a very specific brand of feminism: organic, direct, unadorned, intimate. There were attempts to expand the festival into a bigger tent, especially in 1998, when Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott were among the performers. But in the main Lilith prized urgent singer-songwriters with readily perceptible left-leaning politics.

The last couple of years have seen the first wave of 1990s nostalgia... But Lilith aesthetics haven’t aged well....

...In many ways it is a bastardization of the Madonna model. From the start of her career Madonna was a savvy pop trickster, using outrageous imagery as a distraction while smuggling ideas about religion and social politics into her music. Most of the Gaga generation, however, is interested in distraction as an end in itself...

Feminism is apparently defined as a whack-job clown drawing her own kind to witness her goofiness. Come to think of it....

“But in the main Lilith prized urgent singer-songwriters with readily perceptible left-leaning politics.”

Buddy of mine used to refer to it as “lesbians with guitars”.

Here’s Lady Gaga before she got famous: http://www.mofopolitics.com/2010/01/22/video-lady-gaga-stefani-germanotta-on-boiling-points-2005/

I thought she was kinda hot actually but then I think like 8 out of 10 non-obese women are hot so I’m not very discerning.

Vulgar, but boring.

Lady Gaga is an extravaganza with little point other than the extravaganza. It is entertainment in a pretty pure form, and overwhelming for all of that.

Sure, she abuses every single possible thought, sense, cultural norm, etc. But her POINT is to entertain by overloading your senses with input.

That works. You may not like it if you disconnect some of the components which are purposefully offensive.

But you can’t argue that she fails to entertain.

Think too about the business model you must have in the modern music biz. You cannot make money selling your music; it is all ripped off. So, you have to sell other things, persona, concert tickets, apparel, etc. Music has to be free, and you have to make your money elsewhere, like Paris Hilton; a celebrity who makes money for nothing more than “showing up.”

She should be on Jersey Shore. Not that I ever watched it cause I cancelled TV. She is probably from Staten Island like the rest of the cast.

Seems like her fanbase pretty much consists of gay men.

I kind of like the “Paparazzi” song, I hate the “I want your disease” song, but mostly I can’t stand to see or to watch her. She is unattractive and, as I said, vulgar. I think her talent, such as it is, is for self-promotion not performance.

I think she’s a 12-month flame...which will burn out shortly. If you notice...all the songs kinda run with the same slant. There’s not much creativity over the past six months.

How Lady Gaga Helped Leak 150,000 Classified State Department Cables
Gawker ^ | 07/10/2010 | Adrian Chen

“He was able to avoid detection not because he kept a poker face, they said, but apparently because he hummed and lip-synched to Lady Gaga songs to make it appear that he was using the classified computer’s CD player to listen to music.”

She’s no Madonna, I give credit where it’s due, Madonna has a lot of talent, as far as being a writer and performer, Lady Gaga is just swimming in her wake.

It’s Post-Modernism... a catch-all label for amateurish crap. Can’t paint? Call it “Post-Modern Art”. Can’t sculpt. Ditto. Can’t sing or play an instrument and too lazy to learn how? Yep, you got it... Post-Modern “Art”.
