I was enjoying watching drag racing... the NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals, qualifying rounds from Denver Colorado when driver John Force was on camera complaining about a list of the all time great drivers. Keep in mind that drag racing fans are much like country music fans. They tend to be all American conservatives.
Just then, Force blurted out "You're like FOX News, Hannity and Beck. All lies. All crap."
I had no idea that John Force was that stupid. And I'm not even talking about stupid because he apparently supports the Communist takeover of the USA, but because he would spit in the face of more than 50% of his fans.
Force is... OK, was, the biggest name in drag racing. His sponsors are Castrol, Ford, Auto Club, MAC Tools, Brand Source, and many others.
He's just earned the distinction of being a non-person to me. He's now commie crap.
Is this tribal code?
I wouldn’t be surprised if they have software-controlled throttle activation with manual override. Couldn’t possibly be an on/off switch, though. My R/C (radio controlled) dragster has one but that is one horsepower, not 8,000.
Next time youre at the races, check it out....look at the construction of the car; ask some of the drivers. Doug Kalitta is a good guy to talk to and gets to the point. If you catch Tony Pedregon in a talkative mood hell go on and on; I like him. It is too bad that Gary Scelzi isnt at the tracks as much anymore, hes another great interview. They will all confirm the reality of the sport: the cars throttle is set by the computer and the accelerator switch is the initiator.
I gather that youre not even the mildest of the insiders, who get to enter the cars pit and have sandwiches and drinks with the drivers, wives and crew, and see the cars stripped apart, and then go into the trailer and watch the crew chief set up the cars next run on the computer. Those computer settings adjust the engine’s fuel flow, ignition advance, clutch sequence and the throttle. I have stood next to a crew chief and watched this; and I am misinformed?
Yes, the betterflies open and close, but it is an on/off hit by the driver that goes into the setup in the computer. The driver’s pedal has no increments.
Makes sense what you say. The driver’s foot is just there for reaction time.

Mike Dunn complimented him as being on of his (dunns) top 5 best drivers of the current era when you take all of the variables out.
For some reason it seemed to piss him off...
Larry Dixon is also a good guy to talk too.
It’s too bad that The Snake and Dick Lahaie are gone. Those two would talk to you about anything..
Another good guy to talk to is Warren Johnson, just wait until the day is over, he is very nice and accomidating once his workday is over.

John went there, huh? Well..I bet he is glad he can say whatever he wants now that his daughter is the draw and his dreadful reality show is gone and done.

John was instrumental in geting AAA into the street rod insurance business and they have the best and cheapest coverage there is.
He should only be allowed to race in a Prius from now on.

The other guys you mention really take me back in time. I love the weed-burner pipes on the Swamp Rat; they burned out your eyes big-time!
One of the greatest runs that I saw was Tom McEwen in the Yeakle Plymouth Dragster. He left the line smoking the tires like crazy. Then the car got sideways. Tom throttled back and gradually applied power as the car straightened out; he smoked them all the way to 205mph. It must be noted that this happened just after Denny Milani in the Gotelli Speed Shop dragster broke 210 for the first time. Damn, the Mongoose’s run was beautiful and impressive!
“Throttled back and gradually applied power” is something today’s cats can’t do. Granted, they have the performance and the noise, but I really would like to see throttled cars again, with the better DRIVERS rising to the top.
From my conversations with a few other small name drivers, they would like that too.

If you’re in the pits and get the chance , take some time to talk with Bob Bode. His good nature reminds me of Danny Ongias. He’s racing out of his own pocket, with just a little help from a couple of minor sponsors.
Remember all the experiments with streamlining? I loved those days!

I must respectfully disagree with most of the posters here. What is wrong with someone stating their opinion?
The freedom of political opinion, and the freedom to state that opinion, is one that we must hang on to, regardless of whether or not you agree.

It is all relative. By our standard (most of us here on FR, Maggie Thatcher, if we truly understood her, was left of any conservative Republican. Cameron is a leftist, though he has a ‘Conservative’ label.
Fox is ‘conservative’ vs CNN, NBC, CBS MSNBC etc...etc...etc...most of us know that Fox is less than conservative.
I’ll look some more then. Wasn’t what I remember, but I haven’t been in the pits since rear engine was a fairly new thing. Sort of drifted away from the sport until a few years ago.
LOL...I think about that every time is does the Heritage Foundation ads. Hearing Hannity use the phrase "intellectual firepower" is like hearing Pee Wee Herman advocating "brute muscular force."
When I was a kid my moms friend watched us during the summe. Her husband was Allen Backla, who had the fastest fuel dragster in CO. I spent time in the shop and pits. In those days we pushed the car down the return lane to fire it up. And crew guys pushed it back after a burn out. Sitting in the chase truck and watching them leave was awesome.
There were also some guys, Kaiser bros, who brought a funky contraption they called a “funny” car. The one I recall was a stretched out Corvair body called “Assasination II”.
Shortly after we moved to another state we heard Allen rolled his new car, a beautiful long dragster, at nearly 200 mph and was almost killed. When I moved back here I found he was still big in the Top Fuel scene, but no longer driving. Last I heard he was still alive.
There are people in the world whose opinion is that your head should be chopped off and your wife & daughters raped. I think they should be freely allowed to state that opinion.
It makes it easier to identify them and blow them up.
Couldn’t agree more I have been an ardent supporter of Force’s for his entire career and his daughters and other team members. I also drive Ford products and plan on passing my displeasure on to them as well. It’s been a good run John but you lost me this time I think it might be time to let a young up and comer get those sponsor dollars instead of a old angry fossil.

That should have been a tip off that he was a liberal... James Carville got in a wad over NASCAR Dads some time back - and in an instant liberals started entering the races. Guess they can't stand that we'd have anything without them...
The Constitution with the first 10 ammendments is not difficult to understand. (We need Supreme Court Justices who have rudimentary reading comprehension skills). I agree that this is the correct way to define those who would aspire to office. Most all Dems and many Pubbies would fail on this. It is time to flush the toilet in DC.

Seems that was not the Kaiser bros. Memories fade it seems, but that is the car. Never forget the smell of the fuel, ‘57 Chevys, Willys coups and ‘60s muscle cars lifted tall with strait axles, open headers pounding the ground as they grumbled their way to the starting line. THAT was drag racing!

If you have been a fan of mine you know that I can sometimes say some crazy things. Yesterday, in the heat of the moment, I was caught off-guard by a question from Dave Reiff on ESPN and said some things I regret. I was trying to be cute, but I wasnt. That happens sometimes when people try too hard. I certainly meant no disrespect. I love this country and I love the people in it regardless of who they are, where they came from or what they believe. Im not a political person. I had to be told that I touched a political nerve. I simply threw out some names I was familiar with because theyre on TV when Im doing my daily workouts. Hannity and Beck, dont really have anything against either one. All I was trying to say was that, like me and my friend Mike Dunn, guys on TV sometimes embellish to make a point. I just didnt say it the right way. I used the wrong words. I know that now but I cant change it. I just hope that at some point you can find it in your heart to give me another chance because nothing is more important to me than the American race fans who have supported me and given me and my family the opportunity to live the real American dream. Please dont let one comment that I didnt mean ruin our relationship.
John should understand that this is not just a light item in politics. Our nation is being divided by a socialist faction and a mildly constitutional faction. There are at least ten liberal networks on TV, and just one near-conservative. John attacked the lone wolf.
I gave John one of my books; if he had read the first four chapters he would not say questionable things about those who believe in limited, constitutional government.
John needs to do more than a weak apology. Do some study, John. Understand what is going on around you. I’m not only a drag race fan, but live near your home. Learn, don’t burn the constitution.
Yep, the old guard owners and drivers demonstrated outstanding engineering or driving skill, it was intoxicating to watch.
They quickly migrated to the 392 Chrysler Hemi and a 6-71 to get the near 1000 horsepower they wanted. Now the computer controlled drag race only custom engines turn out 10 times that, and the cars go so fast it necessitated a shorter track. The driver that could handle that would be impressive indeed.
The rivalry in the old days was intense, East vs West (California), but the camaraderie was just as intense, too. They kept secrets, but not grudges. These guys were just regular Americans living in a place where an ordinary guy could have a quality motor car, and make it go like Hell if he wanted to.
Is this a great country or what?

I once talked to one of the drivers about the idea of a home-dragster category. No clutch tricks, pure foot throttle with no computer....in other words, make a car that many people could build with lower costs.
The problem is that there would be so much competition in the field that some would never make money. And the extra cars would take away from the sponsor’s advertising effects. Even worse (for today’s crews), the current star drivers would become known as spam in a can when compared to the “real” drivers.
Because they have everything to lose and nothing to gain, the Force/Schumacher faction that controls much of drag racing would never allow the money to go there. Why spoil a good living?
That would be a great idea to bring back the popular appeal of the sport.
Rules to make it affordable to the average guy, stock block (5000 or more units delivered in sold vehicles) and heads (from the manufactures' performance line sold publicly), and superchargers from a transportation manufacturer or aftermarket designed for street installation. Maybe a cubic inch limit, but unlimited mods, wow, what a thought.
You're right, of course, they'd never allow it, the money wouldn't all go where they wanted it to go.
