Chupacabra spotted near Tecumseh? (Mysterious Creature Prowls Oklahoma)

A group of teens in Tecumseh make an unusual sighting. The group now wonders if they ran across the legendary chupacabra. The kids claim to have spotted the unique creature in the woods behind Tecumseh High School. A cell phone picture of the mystery animal backs up their story. "It's got long back legs and it's front legs are small. It has a long tail and doesn't have any fur," said Ryan Craighead.

An internet search of "chupacabra" turns up some interesting images of reptilian sci-fi creatures.

Wildlife experts say the chupacabra is an unproven folktale.

"It is a mythological legend that's taken on a life of its own," said Oklahoma City Zoo Education Director Teresa Randall.

Documented sightings of the chupacabra often turn up hairless dog-like creatures.

"I think it would be realistic to have a coyote-dog-mix with pretty good case of mange," explains Randall.

The word "chupacabra" literally means the "goat sucker."

The name comes from its reported habit of drinking the blood of livestock.

Exactly what the kids saw in Tecumseh remains up for debate.

"I don't know. I'm thinking it's the chupacabra, but people say it's not real. I don't know," said Craighead.

"I've researched the chupacabra and that's what I'm thinking it is," said Dacee Ferguson.

It’s always a dog or coyote with terminal mange.

Why all the naysayers? I have found that groups of teenagers are highly reliable and never exaggerate or concoct stories. /s

The word "chupacabra" literally means the "goat sucker."

Chupar = to suck

cabre = goat

But, Chupacabra literally translated means, run like hell...

Not always. Some carcasses have been analyzed and they think the animals are some kind of hybrid—wolf/coyote, dog/coyote, etc. What seems to be most disturbing is that many of them have no fear of humans. On the other hand, they lack fear of cars, which means lots of them end up as roadkill.

Something bit my baby kitten’s face last night. Could it have been this thing?
