Vitamin D promises to be the most talked-about and written-about supplement of the decade. While studies continue to refine optimal blood levels and recommended dietary amounts, the fact remains that a huge part of the population from robust newborns to the frail elderly, and many others in between are deficient in this essential nutrient.
If the findings of existing clinical trials hold up in future research, the potential consequences of this deficiency are likely to go far beyond inadequate bone development and excessive bone loss that can result in falls and fractures. Every tissue in the body, including the brain, heart, muscles and immune system, has receptors for vitamin D, meaning that this nutrient is needed at proper levels for these tissues to function well.

Another day, another D ping.
sunshine :) Go outside its free.........
These days where I live and where I work the sun doesn’t see much of me. Where does one find cheap D3?
I need a good hit of cod liver oil.
Vit D ping
I’m currently taking 114,000 iu a week. Started on 50,000iu once a week a year ago and dr upped it about 2 weeks ago because I’m still not up to normal range.
Not for everyone does it work. There are some of us who do not process it right and can not get enough from the sun.
But if you make enough vitamin D in your skin in summer, it can meet the bodys needs for the rest of the year, Dr. Holick said.I thought we were supposed to avoid the sun.
We have to be like Kerry, and avoid the sun before we go into the sun?
D3 is very cheap. I buy mine at the Health Food Store, 2000 I.U., $9.00 for 120 softgels. I take one a day, my doctor tested me for vit. D deficiency and I am normal, but I still
take it as I am prone to be in front of the computer a lot.
I get mine from Vitacost - they seem to have pretty good prices.
Got Milk? Sorry couldn’t resist!
Just about any drug store chain. Look for the two-fer sales as they seem to be every week for some brand at some store.
Contrary to what people think milk does not have much vitamin D in it. I read that it would take 40 8 oz glasses a day to get what you need of vitmin D from milk.
Whales are also a good source of Vitamin D...God provides for those living in a short daylight cycle (Arctic locations ...interesting, isn’t it?
Vitamin D3 2000 IU Softgel Capsules (180 capsules) $6.49

Come to think of it, should this be cost effective, you can get fish oil with vitamin D, calcium-magnesium-zinc with vitamin D and maybe other combinations. Some such combinations are often recommended.
Vitamin D3 is best, also comes in liquid form. Absorbs faster too! Rite-Aid is around $5.00 for a bottle of 48 servings. However, it depends on how many IUs you want per day. (2 tsp gives you 1000). Some olders folks can’t swallow the pills so this is a good alternative for them.
Thank you, it pays to shop around. Will order from them next time.
South Florida. Sure the people suck. The economy is weaker than average. Prices are higher than most places. But hey, you can’t beat it for sun.
Umhhh.... So's Melanoma. But it costs a fortune to get rid of. I'll take my D in a pill, thanks. Chemo's a bitch.
everything in moderation grasshopper :-)
Right... Sunlight in moderation... Gee, who knew...??
Where were you 40 years ago?
I'm an “older folk”
Before the "depression" - before I lost my job of nearly 30 years, I used to buy supplements with reckless abandon. Now, I appreciate any advice on how to make do on a very slim shoestring. I'll swallow what I can get, even if I choke. :)
I really would not take enough Vitamin D if I had to choke down pills or softgels. I found Vitamin D gummies at Walmart, 1000 iu. They taste good enough that I have to discipline myself not to gobble them.

I was pleasantly surprised to read that I can store up the D for the winter during my spring and summer gardening.
This is really an important article — who would have thought Vitamin D is that important and that so many people are deficient.
This part was nothing short of amazing:
“The rising incidence of Type 1 diabetes may be due, in part, to the current practice of protecting the young from sun exposure. When newborn infants in Finland were given 2,000 international units a day, Type 1 diabetes fell by 88 percent, Dr. Holick said.”
Onceuponatime....when I was younger and stupider
Sorry you lost your job, and the way things are it's probably not looking up, right? I'll keep you in my thoughts and say a prayer.
I used to “nuke” my horse pills in the microwave with a half cup of cider vinegar, then mixed with veg juice - which made the “medicine” go down.
Thanks, 4000 IU daily for me.
Cheers!
Very interesting and not the first time I’ve heard about this. I am a 40 year type 1 diabetic and am also vitamin D deficient. My level was 7 the first time the Dr tested it normal is between 40 and 50.I’ve been on a prescribed vitmin D once a week now upped to twice a week and am hoping I hit the normal range soon.
FReepmail me if you want on or off the diabetes and/or immunology ping lists. Thanks decimon
“I thought we were supposed to avoid the sun.”
.
Essentially nonsense.
Avoiding the sun is the biggest cause of skin cancers; especially melanoma.
.
The term "Juvenile Diabetes" is a misnomer.
Regarding giving newborns Vitamin D, with 8 months of subpar weather I would imagine the kiddies in Finland, and the adults, usually have a difficult time making enough Vitamin D.
Actually, at that latitude, everybody has difficulty making enough Vitamin D ~ hence the use of fish and other sources.
I take Vitamin D and also eat a lot of sardines.
The only thing that the doctors see as a problem is low Vit D.
I was just prescribed it at 50,000 K. I take the 1 K pills daily on my own as well since I am pretty deficient. I should be getting a second blood test in a couple of months.
