Not only was he using a term commonly used to describe dogs, Obama was agreed with the assessment of a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan (and fellow Democrat), Senator Robert Byrd:

My understanding was that Zero said that Americans as a whole were “mongrels”, not just “African”-Americans.

That is what I thought too.
We are not “mongrels”,we’re Americans. That is a distinct nationality. Not a specific racial group,but a specific nationality. We are not “mongrels”. I think the racial differences get emphasized to divide us so that we cannot recognize that we are a specific ethnicity. That being American.
