Another $1 billion in federal funds is being sought by the California High-Speed Rail Authority to help build the first stages of a proposed 800-mile, $45 billion rail network.
The project secured more than $2.2 billion in federal stimulus funds earlier this year out of $8 billion made available for such projects nationwide...

Good luck to California, but there is still much competition from other states, so there is no guarantee that they'll get additional funding the next time around.
IMHO, we should focus more of our resources on developing passenger rail infrastructure. But the Highway and Airline Lobby are still consuming the lion's share of our Transportation Budget.
