THE disembowelled bodies of brutally slaughtered whales line a dockside just 230 miles from Britain - as families with children wander among them.
More than 200 protected pilot whales were hacked to death with knives and sharpened hooks by fishermen who trapped them in coves on the Faroe Islands.
Disturbing images show deep gouges where whalers hacked at the animals to sever their spinal cords. Others show the bodies of unborn calves torn from their mothers' wombs.
Crowds of islanders, including youngsters, gathered to watch the slaughter, known as "the grind".
Anti-whaling activist Peter Hammarstedt, 28, exposed last week's killings by posing as a film-maker in the fishing town of Klaksvik.
He said: "One whale had five to six chops to her head. Her death would have been slow and extremely painful. Some whales are hacked repeatedly for up to four minutes until they finally die. When I got to the docks it was a truly gruesome sight."
Swede Peter, a member of activist group Sea Shepherd, said he counted 236 dead whales before he was recognised by a local and made his escape.

I dunno if you wanna ping the Whale Wars ping list, this got me sick after seeing the pictures. I can understand a few whales being killed for food, but ripping out calves from the mothers wombs just for S + G is disgusting...
Viewer warning if you click the link you will see pictures that will most likely make you nauseous.
Just call it partial birth abortion.
Sick bastards.
Animal abusers almost always migrate to offing people, and many have serious mental issues that only warrants the death penalty as an effective cure.
Why didnt that Whale Wars show go there ?
I agree. There are many of here that belong to the Japanese “they’ve been doing it for centuries” crowd. I think its senseless.
I don't know. I just think they need to remove the guts if they don't want the meat to spoil. Whether or not they should be hunting that particular animal is a different matter. But if a disemboweled animal makes you nauseous, you really should stop eating meat.
I will admit that I am not familiar with the butcher process for pigs and cattle, but I highly doubt they disembowel the cow and or rip calves from wombs, that is unnecessary.
They were chucking spears at the whales like some backwards hellhole in Africa.
They have done that for many decades where they depended on the sparse food supplies. Their existence sources was from the sea and sheep on the cliffs, where they also produced the salted dried cod fish, nothing new!!!
Have you ever visit a slaughter house, nothing different???
Some of the Sea Shepherd folk were there filming but they got spotted and they turn tail and ran. I guess I would too if a bunch of people armed with spears turned towards me pissed and angry!
Am about 90% sure that the cows get their throats slit, they are disemboweled while still alive.
I would never go vegan, but I don't think torturing an animal for fun is a good thing.
This is 2010 we aren't living in the Dark Ages. If they want whale meat, fine, but don't torture the damn things.

A lot of blubber. (Save the baby humans.)
*edit* should say cows DONT get disemboweled while alive...
Some years ago here in the Keys we spent months trying to bring a dozen or so pilot whales back from a mysterious illness that was effecting them.
They were beaching themselves.
Months later we were able to save a few of them but most perished.
To hear about others arbitrarily killing these animals when there is so much other seafood out there is senseless at best and moronic at worst.
“Some of the Sea Shepherd folk were there filming but they got spotted and they turn tail and ran. I guess I would too if a bunch of people armed with spears turned towards me pissed and angry!”
Too bad they didn’t kill every one of the Sea Shepard creeps!
They got beat up by Canadian seal hunters in 2005, I think the hippies realized that they need to run like hell if they are spotted.
“Locals kill whales for food. A Fisheries Office spokesman said: “We use the most efficient and humane means of killing.”
All that needs to be said
It's called hunting for food and it appears to be no more brutal than any other culling of a herd.
What’s wrong with it if the animals are used?
Your are totally off your failed sensitive rockers!
They don’t do that for fun or entertainment, they do that for survival, they didn’t have your convenient McDonalds of Burger King, and by the way the meat tastes pretty good also!!
Here is something you real should use your “spoiled” energy to put a stopper to, a human being, not an animal for food!!!
Graphic warning:

One must kill and butcher the cow to get the steak. Many urban people of today have lost comprehension of that fact. I took my daughter fishing and we caught a nice rainbow. We kept it in a bucket of water until we got home. I killed the fish, gutted it and my wife cooked it. Both my daughter and my wife could not eat the fish. It should be noted both my wife and daughter are avid fish eaters-i.e. fish from a fish market!
I am assuming these are Faroe Islanders, who have been hunting pilot whales for over 1,000 years. There are so many whales that they serously deplete fishing grounds around the islands. These islanders rely heavily on fishing. Its no more barbaric than butchering any other animal.
If you can stand watching a Nordic way of life, then go back to watch your Whit Sox!!!
What’s YOUR take on abortion???
Exactly. Whales have been used as food for centuries.I have no problem with hunting for food humans aren’t meant to be vegetarians afterall.
There was a slaughter house not too far from Comiskey Park in Chicago (old stockyards area). They killed the pigs by slitting their throats. Not disemboweling them while alive.
If you are killing for food, fine, I am a meat eater, however, slit the throat don't start acting like Vikings from the Dark Ages.
And if abortion is your number 1 issue, do you think it is fine that they tore a calf out of the whales womb while both whales were still alive? You'd probably go nutty if that happened to a human.
I would think someone who is as anti-abortion as you are would be opposed to ripping a baby from a mother's womb regardless what type of mammal they may be.
I don't oppose killing the whales for food, I oppose the WAY in which they are killed.
What part of that is hard to understand?
Had that been in Greenland, the Huskies would have had a “field” day with all that fresh intestines and blubber. They will eat anything and are effective “wast manage removers” from their outhouses!!!
Any one out there that eats meat should get a grip. The meat you eat was an animal that was slaughtered. Today in the developed world it is done in slaughter houses out of site of the public.
In the not to distant past you fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers would do this to feed their families in the front yard with cows, goats, sheep or other animals.
Personal in the last five years in my travels to less developed areas of the world I have twice had the “fatted calf” slaughtered to fed me and and the group I was with.

Oh, the humanity ...
Get over yourselves, those people need to eat the same as we do. If you eat meat yourselves, STFU ... being at the top of the food chain has its advantages.
If you're a vegan, enjoy your brussel sprouts.
“I will admit that I am not familiar with the butcher process for pigs and cattle, but I highly doubt they disembowel the cow and or rip calves from wombs, that is unnecessary.
They were chucking spears at the whales like some backwards hellhole in Africa.”
You have no idea about butchering. The first thing that is done is the animal is hung and gutted.
I did not read that the Whales were either. They were speared and then disemboweled. No difference. it is done to keep the meat from spoiling.
Have you ever field dressed a deer or a hog? Ever gutted a fish? Ever been to a commercial slaughethouse? The animals you eat don't grow on trees or vines ... they're alive, they're dead, they're on your plate.
Exactly....I’ve seen deer dressed, pigs, etc. There is no difference here. The whales were already dead when this was done.
And how is that WAY???
I question this "activist's" account. These whales were already dead by the time they were placed on the docks........Like all other fish, if you want to kill them to keep them from flopping around in the boat you have to sever the spinal cord at the base of the head or smack them in the head with a hammer. These fish are too big for a hammer.....
As to how they were actually caught, the article doesn't say.......But I doubt is was by rod and reel.
Barbaric is too nice for what this is!!!
Would you feel the same way if these were oragutans, chimps, labs, or golden retrievers?
I get your point. We are imposing our morals on others about our identification with animals. But I would venture to guess that these Brits aren’t starving and the whales are protected for a reason.
Perhaps fishermen don't like the whales because they eat the same fish that the fishermen catch?
I have been on that dock a couple times in the seventies and it would be full of other fish landed, such as huge flounder looking flatfish bigger than your dining table, the Halibuts!
The whales do not have four legs to walk on!!
The fish oil and fish meal stench in the air was very strong, which the Faeroes called the stench of money, LOL!!!
Sorry...all I see there is dinner.
lunch?
I also understand that they come in pistol style and pneumatic powered versions.

Something like this might have caused the "half inch round hole, with no bullet fragments" that was found in the top of Ron Brown's skull.
How do you feel about the way animals are killed by the Kosher method?
Because that was one of the ways the Nazis demonized the Jews, by graphically showing Kosher animal slaughter, and decrying it as "barbaric."
“If you are killing for food, fine, I am a meat eater, however, slit the throat don’t start acting like Vikings from the Dark Ages.”
I hope you will educate yourself on this link below!
Take the time to see all the stunning an beautiful photos on the the top banner slide presentation (little slow but great) and then click on the youtube video at the bottom of the page!!
That shows a different rural lifestyle instead of photos from a British tabloid!!!
There's a fair chance that when Obama has finished destroying the economy, Americans may be doing this again to keep their families fed.
For most human beings throughout history, the slaughter of food animals has been a necessary part of existence. For the most part, only fat, well-fed people accustomed to buying their meat in clean little anonymous packages can afford the emotional luxury of being horrified by photos or videos depicting the slaughter and butchery of food animals. Let these same people become hungry enough, and they'll rip a food animal apart with their bare hands and eat its meat raw without a second thought, let alone a sentimental tear.
Linky Thing: Article Source Above
Whaling in the Faroe Islands has been practiced since about the time of the first Norse settlements on the islands. It is regulated by Faroese authorities but not by the International Whaling Commission as there are disagreements about the Commission's competency for small cetaceans. Around 950 Long-finned Pilot Whales (Globicephala melaena) are killed annually, mainly during the summer. The hunts, called "grindadráp" in Faroese, are non-commercial and are organized on a community level; anyone can participate. The hunters first surround the pilot whales with a wide semicircle of boats. The boats then drive the pilot whales slowly into a bay or to the bottom of a fjord.
Most Faroese consider the hunt an important part of their culture and history. Animal-rights groups criticize the hunt as being cruel and unnecessary, while the hunters claim in return that most journalists do not exhibit sufficient knowledge of the catch methods or its economic significance.
Whale hunting equipment is legally restricted to hooks, ropes, and assessing-poles for measurement. A boat that has been equipped in such a manner is a pilot whale boat. The pilot whale boat is not a traditional small Faroese rowing boat, neither is it a vehicle used by the coastal navigation, and it does not include the modern Faroese factory fleet. A pilot whale boat simply describes the temporary condition of a small boat during a hunt, which is otherwise used for line fishery or leisure purposes.
When the whalers have met the requirements specified above, the pilot whales can be driven. Whale drives only take place when a school of whales is sighted close to land, and when sea and weather conditions make them possible. The whaling regulations specify how the school of whales is to be driven ashore. The drive itself works by surrounding the pilot whales with a wide semicircle of boats. On the whaling-foreman's signal, stones attached to lines are thrown into the water behind the pilot whales, thus the boats drive the whales towards an authorised beach or fjord, where the whales then beach themselves. It is not permitted to take whales on the ocean-side of the rope. A pilot whale drive is always under supervision of local authorities.
The pilot whales that are not beached were often stabbed in the blubber with a sharp hook, called a gaff (in Faroese sóknarongul), and then pulled ashore. But, after allegations of animal cruelty, the Faroese whalers started using blunt gaffs (in Faroese blásturongul) to pull the whales ashore by their blowholes. Today, the ordinary gaff is only being used to pull killed whales ashore. The blunt gaff became generally accepted since its invention in 1993, and it is not only more effective, but it is also more humane by comparison to the other gaff. However, anti-whaling groups such as Greenpeace and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) claim that the partial blocking and irritation of the airway hurts and panics the animal.
Furthermore, in 1985 the Faroe Islands outlawed the use of spears and harpoons in the hunt, as it considers these weapons to be unnecessarily cruel to animals.
Once ashore the pilot whale is killed by cutting the dorsal area through to the spinal cord with a special whaling knife, a grindaknívur. Given the circumstances during a pilot whale hunt, the whaling knife is considered the safest and most effective equipment with which to kill the whales. Naturally since the whales are killed manually death cannot, by definition, be instantaneous. The length it takes for a whale to die varies between a few seconds to a few minutes, with the average time being 30 seconds.
Can I borrow that for the Whale Wars live thread on Friday?
