Ford Motor Co. recently announced its new plan to spur interest in the redesigned 2011 Explorer: Ask customers to pay more to get less. The vehicle will come with a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 290 horsepower, but, for a little extra, Ford will swap in a less powerful four-cylinder engine instead.
This makes me wonder: Is there something in Detroits water that causes automobile executives make bizarre decisions?...

I does sound wacky—unless there’s something not in the article like an outlandish (10 or more) mpg improvement in going to the smaller engine. That would turn an SUV into an economy vehicle. I doubt that the improvement is that dramatic.
Am I old to think that getting 290 horsepower out of 3.5 liters and six cylinders is pretty darn impressive? The 5.2L V8 in my 1996 Ram only did 220 hp new.

Actually, I think (hope) that Ford is shoving it in the face of the environmentals and US government.
