Idaho (Reuters) - Idaho game officials said on Friday they would seek federal approval to kill off hundreds of wolves in their state despite a court ruling that restored protection of the animals under the Endangered Species Act.
In a conference call with reporters, Idaho Fish and Game officials said they remained determined to carry out a plan, nixed by Thursday's court ruling, that calls for reducing Idaho's wolf population by over 40 percent, to 500 from 845.
One wolf pack in particular, a group of 100 animals in northern Idaho, is targeted for reduction by 80 percent.
Montana, the second of two states where the gray wolf was ordered returned to the federal endangered species list, is likely to follow Idaho's lead in seeking permission to thin its wolf packs through licensed sport hunting or government squads of aerial gunners.
Hunting of listed animals for sport is generally forbidden under the Endangered Species Act. But the two states would presumably seek special permits under the statute to allow for limited hunting or culling of wolf packs.

I don’t understand why you can’t just shoot one and not tell anybody about it. Who would know? Eventually the problem would be solved.
Yes, that’s referred to as the three S’s, shoot, shovel, shut up. Just don’t get caught because the fine is in the thousands.
You mean out in the middle of nowhere, miles from the nearest living person?
I for one would never condone such behavior. Never
Because unlike being an illegal alien, if you were caught.... you would be arrested and charged with a federal crime.
Why don’t we just trap the enviro-whacko’s and put them in zoos.
Because of the Ranger nazi. They do nothing but roam the countryside looking for violations. Some of the wolves are tagged with radio beacons and if they quit moving then helicopters are dispatched. I do agree with you, just shot the malicious ones that eat your property and your livelihood, and have an air-tight alibi.
Why is the government not concerned about the elk?
Not a bad idea. Alternate their cages with four legged animals and they could enjoy each other.
Good question, and why aren’t the enviros concerned about the elk?
“You mean out in the middle of nowhere, miles from the nearest living person?
I for one would never condone such behavior. Never...”
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you to learn that someone is shooting wolves in this neck of the woods!
Philuck Federal Approval! Just do it Idahoans.
The states should just tell the feds to f*** off and kill them anyway.
I hear you and they just may.
There’s a ton of people up in those states that are totally fed up with the feds, this judge and all the enviro nazi organizations behind this and the reintroduction of wolves from the beginning.
One letter I read said this ruling would probably be responsible for more wolves being killed by hunters than if they allowed a hunting season, they’ll just shoot them and let them lay to rot.
Endangered species overrule other regulations. For example, elk hunting may have to stop to provide enough food for the wolves.
You know, clear govt. logic
It should be noted that these are NOT wolves native to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, or any other state minus Alaska, for that matter. They’re Canadian gray wolves introduced to the lower 48 where they were never native. These wolves are MUCH larger than the native timberwolf—reaching up to 180 pounds as opposed to the native timberwolves 50-60 pounds. They also hunt in large packs, whereas the timberwolf only hunted in pairs.
It’s the equivalent of unleashing a pitbull into a poodle fighting ring.
Quite frankly, every single one of them should be destroyed before they do away with the native timberwolf. I’m sure you’ll find, however, that the wolf protectionists would scream to the moon about such an idea from their enclaves in NYC, Boston, DC, and SF.
The best way to deal with this wolf problem would be to introduce these Canadian Grays into the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Good. They were driven off once they will be driven off again.
” Good question, and why arent the enviros concerned about the elk?”
1) Wolves oppose humans and are thus seen as heroes.
2) Wolves kill livestock and drive ranchers out of business. Thus, they are heroes.
3) Hunters like elk. Hunters should be destroyed. Thus, environmentalists don’t care about elk.
4) Wolves limit the economic viability of communities throughout the West. Thus, they are heroes.
5) Wolves provide environmental organizations millions of dollars in funding and funding, and thus are heroes.
Because there are no oil/gas pipelines.
