There is an open secret in the oil industry that dare not speak its name: peak oil.
Well, two did speak its name and gained no acclaim for it. One, M. King Hubbert, died years ago. The other and the most controversial, Matthew Simmons, died at his Maine summer home Aug. 8.
The peak oil idea is simple: Oil is a finite commodity, and one day we are going to use up all of it.
Hubbert, a geologist, began speculating on the effects of the gradual decline in worldwide production in the 1950s. He expressed this in a simple graph, which became known as “Hubbert’s pimple.”
He tended to draw the graph freehand, and it looked more like a Rubenesque breast than a pimple. It was so simple that he drew it over and over again to illustrate his points for journalists and politicians. Later, he would draw lines through the pimple to demonstrate where we had been and where we were going, based on the then-known reserves and rate of depletion.
For his scholarship, Hubbert was eased out at Shell Oil Company in 1964. He took a job with the U.S. Geological Survey and continued his speculative research--until he was thrust into national prominence by the oil crisis of the 1970s. Full article at: Peak Oil

Well then we must just stop using it immediately. We wouldn’t want to run out of oil after all. Despite there being 300+ years of supply currently available.
300 years certainly isn’t long enough to develop an alternative. We must kill our economy right the heck now!

One would think that they would gladly see the end of the terrible, carbon polluting, nasty a** oil, wouldn't one? I, for one, hope we never run out and am a firm believer that people will one day wrest control of our country away from all the left wing destroyers and inject common sense back into the USA.

The world saw there is PLENTY of oil in the deep waters of the ocean. That’s why enviro-nazis such as BO have to ban further exploration. They want everyone to drive a solar-powered edition of the government-produced Volt by 2020.

Peak oil? - perhaps a thousand years from now, but such a discussion would fit in better at the Huffington Puffington comPost, or DU.

The Earth will be destroyed by an asteroid before it runs out of oil, or before humans can increase the CO2 levels enough to be harmful. The problem is that we will run out of enough people to offset the kooks and lying leftists long before that time. Staying the environmentalist/Marxist course will make life on Earth so intolerable mankind will long for extinction. Our catastrophic end will be a blessing.
I try to keep an open mind about this and listen to both sides. One thing puzzles me though, and it is this. If oil is constantly produced, why are we not pumping oil out of the old fields in places like Pennsylvania once again. I tend to believe there is quite a bit of oil left, but that it is not as easy to get at as the old reserves. I am not sure I buy into the Russian “Abiotic” theories. If they are true what is the mechanism or process for oil regeneration?
India and China are busy ramping UP to use gasoline. If it was “doomed” they should just start with the next generation technology.
Nope. This is about getting the United States off of oil because we are too productive and “consume too much of the world’s resources”.
Salidczar has shut down more oil than was known to exist years ago. When oil appears to run out more will be found and by then there will be no problem with making all we need.

I assert with little knowledge of the oil indistry.
1. There is enought oil to last us thru this cycle of civilization.
Use the Tar sand in Canada and the oil shale in the western united states. There also is oil in clay in the US southeast. Also convert coal, which we have a lot of to hydrocarbons. After all of that is done use the abundant natural gas found in the Marcellus shale deposits. All in all we are prabably good for 1.000 years if we don blow oulselves up or regress to the 14th century by letting the Muslims take over the country/world.
2. Use small nuclear generators to produce electricity for urban areas.
3. Turn some of our smart students loose on the problem in our major universities and see what they come up with.
In recent months, Simmons became even more controversial. Correctly, he estimated that BP spillage in the Gulf of Mexico was many times what the company had first claimed and was almost spot on. But he also said that BP would be forced into bankruptcy and that a nuclear device was the only way to stop the leak. BP responded by ending its relationship with Simmons’ bank. And Simmons ended his lingering involvement with it, as well.
Simmons was a perfect storm of a man, raging against the myths and self-satisfaction of the oil industry. In his absence, there will be a certain quietude in the petroleum clubs of Houston, Denver and Edmonton, Canada and elsewhere.
Well this last paragraph about requiring a nuclear devise to stop the leak kind of shoots him in the foot. So far, BP isn't bankrupt yet either. Then again, Obama tried.
