"Ragged Old Flag" by Johnny Cash (sort of a Vanity)

You can stand and salute or bow your heads while listening. I offer this after Beck's rally, "Restoring Honor" where the love of God and patriotism and support of our military was reaffirmed in the hearts of hundreds of thousands of Americans. I thought this was an appropriate reminder.

Johnny Horton's “Johnny Freedom”

God and Freedom.

A little more upbeat.

Dave Dudley did a few similar types of things in the Vietnam era.

Nice sentiments, but some bad history, at least regarding the Alamo.

There isn't the slightest reason to believe that the American flew alongside the Texas flag at the Alamo. The Texans were already dealing with rifts in their movement, especially between those who favored full Independence for Texas, and those who wished to restore the Mexican Constitution of 1824. The idea that the American flag would have been gratuitously flown, encouraging further rifts and factions among Texans, is doubtful.

There are, very much non-contemporary, but popularly and widely accepted, accounts that the 1824 flag flew over the Alamo (the Mexican flag with "1824" replacing the coat of arms) but they appear to be baseless. Not that the defenders of the Alamo might not have flown the 1824 flag, if only to piss off Santa Anna. There's just no evidence they actually did.

Fact is we have no idea what flags were flown at the Alamo. No one thought, at the time, or anywhere near the time, to ask any of the survivors. The Mexicans neither preserved or recorded any captured flags. (Santa Anna likely burned them unceremoniously, along with the bodies of the rebellious Texans.)

BTW, the Texas (Lone Star) Flag, was not adopted until several years after the battle of the Alamo, i.e. until after independence. So it wasn't flown there either.
