This toy from Deluxe Reading is one of the most highly sought-after toys from the baby boomer generation. Jimmy Jet was to die for in the mid 1960s, and today worth several hundred dollars in any condition.

I still have my collection of “dragster” cars that I made out of clothespins (the “new” kind with the springs). The round springs were the wheels. Put racing stripes, etc. with crayon. The oval rug in the hallway was my race track.

An early childhood friend had a Jimmy Jet (or possibly a somewhat similar item... I remember it fired "missiles" - marketing lingo for glorified darts - indifferently) which I was assured was beyond my family's means.

(And it may have been so, although I suspect it also may have been perceived by mom and dad as something I would break within the first hour of use.)

I did however, get something one Christmas that appealed even more to me at the time:

In conjunction with my skull, the configuration of this marvel pushed my left ear out and forward so that it was quite uncomfortable to wear for long periods; the "microphone" feature was as technically advanced as a kazoo, and proved less durable - note how I can recall those details almost 50 years after the fact, yet be unable to memorize my cell phone number - but I still thought it was "neato."

Yes this would have been good for young boys. I believe that kazoo effect was by way of putting a small layer of paper inside the mask, which as the air from speech hit it would vibrate, muffle, and distort the voice.
