Sacramento eatery takes 'dancing shrimp' off menu

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A Sacramento restaurant agreed to stop serving live shrimp after an animal-rights group said the practice was cruel to the shellfish.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the restaurant, Nishiki Sushi, suggested squeezing lemon juice on the shrimps' exposed flesh so they would writhe as they were eaten. The dish is commonly referred to as "dancing shrimp" and is considered a delicacy in Japan.

PETA contacted the restaurant after receiving dozens of complaints about the practice.

Just so long as they don't put dancing rice on the menu to replace the shrimp.

Belonging to PETA should be a death penalty!

Horrible! Why do people want to torture their food?

My personal line is vertebrate (yes/no). I have and do eat some invertebrates live (oysters, shrimp, cuttlefish, mussels). But I will not eat any vertebrate that is still alive. Possible exception for one like Rihanna, but that's different.

I better not mention a Chinese delicacy called drunken shrimp, where live shrimp is doused with cooking wine in a glass bowl before it is cooked with a burner below the bowl. And they do it at the table, too.

People eat those things live? Im no PETA nut, but I dont believe any animal should be made to suffer. Kill it fast then cook it and eat it.

I use Tabasco(tm) sauce on the live oysters I eat. It's not about torture. Torture is for something that is advanced enough to have a spine.

Just to enrage PETA and render them impotent at the same time we could bring back animal sacrifice as a religious ritual.(Some religions do so today-just imagine a “Diverse” religion practicing animal sacrifice, PETA members would go mad!)

then cook it and eat it.

I guess I should have sent the tuna tar-tar back because it was raw? NOT! The dish with the 3 sauces (heavenly) was a special gift from the chef, for who I had been a slave, back during my internship. It was great.

You eat your food the way you like it, I'll eat mine the way I like it.

In Singapore they have a dish called "Drunken Shrimp". I was in the serving room early before a banquet and heard this flipping sound in the room, finally tracked it down to a chafing dish half full of shrimp thoroughly enjoying a long swim in some fine white wine. Later, they pop them into a wok at the table, stir 'em up and serve them. So this sounds cruel until you know the reason ... enjoying their wine bath, they are also replacing that nasty streak down their backs with marinade. So they are not only well-seasoned, but nice and clean when they hit the plate.

Wonder if these people ever saw a lobster get cooked in Boston? I guess you should go shoot the lobster first with a 357 ... uh, no wait, no guns there? Well maybe just stomp on them before putting them into the hot water? Where does sanity end and insanity begin for these people?

Unless there’s some legitimate culinary reason for it you kind of have to wonder what’s going on in the head of someone who wants their food to writhe. Kind of like pulling the wings off of flies.

Apparently the creatures have nerves, if not spines, so it’s still torture. I see no point in making my food suffer more than it already has to, but that’s my food, not yours. If they could scream, I suspect there would be a significant decrease in such dining techniques.

Death is a drawn out process (except in the case of nukes), not a single event. As cells die from lack of O2, enzymes are released that change the flavor and texture of the cells.

In beef, given a few months to age at the correct temperature, that's some fine eating.

Some seafood is best eaten alive to achieve maximum potential good taste. Same with insects generally. I would much rather eat a live cricket than one of the canned ones.

Fish eat fish alive and raw. And I doubt they think of torture when they do it.

What the hell are you talking about. They are shrimp? I fish with live shrimp every weekend and don’t think twice about putting a hook anywhere through their body.

Lobsters scream when dumped in boiling water. That doesn't seem to slow anyone down. Sea urchins make a grinding sort of noise when they are killed. Doesn't really slow down consumption of them either.

I was given dominion over the plants and animals of the world. The fish that swim and the birds that fly. The entity that gave me that dominion has the final say on whether I have misused it. I try not to.

I understand and respect your beliefs. And I would never offer you live or raw shellfish for a meal.

But you can bet I'm gonna keep eating it when I can get it. ;)

That I get. But dousing it in lemon just to make it writhe strikes me as peculiar.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. This so-called "dancing shrimp" sounds like a stupid, barbaric practice that should have led to the restaurant's closing. Getting one's jollies from the suffering of any creature, no matter how seemingly inferior, is sadistic and inhuman. It is in fact proof that the creature is not inferior to its torturer.

I'm betting that line was from the writer, or 'journalist' that wrote the piece. To elicit the exact response it has engendered.

The left has a mission, and they use every opportunity to propogandize and confuse normal folks.

The lemon (better with lime juice) is for flavor and to modify the enzymes.

And nothing to do with the intent of the diner in causing pain.

Like twisting the eyes of lobsters when holding races on the kitchen floor while they were waiting for their turn in the pot!
