9/11 News footage
12th September 2010 | vanity

Posted on 09/11/2010 6:21:53 PM PDT by naturalman1975

I teach History at a private secondary school (high school) in Australia. It's already Sunday here and I'm considering changing some of my lessons for tomorrow. I realised last week that to my senior students, 9/11 is history - it happened when they were still little kids and they were to a great extent shielded from it. At least half a dozen of my students are planning on going into the Australian Defence Force next year, and they may well find themselves serving in the war that started that day or something else coming from it.

They know what happened - the facts of it. But these are kids of a TV generation and I think there'd be real value for their learning if they could see news broadcasts from that day. I've managed to source some from British TV news, and I'm guessing there must be some from US news sources out there somewhere - if anyone can point me to where I can get something like a recording of news programs from that morning in the US, I'd rather use those than British sources.

Some surreal days indeed.

For some reason I slept late that day and didn’t turn on the news till sometime after the first plane hit. On the news they were talking about a tragic accident when I saw another plane come into view and was wondering why such a large plane would be that close.

When the second plane hit, I think everyone instinctively knew it was intentional. Things are kind of jumbled in my memory but news of the Shanksville and Pentagon crashes came in at some point.

When the first tower fell it was like my heart dropped out of my chest. I just knew there would be tens of thousands dead. Thank God I was wrong.

I went into town to a friend’s house and found he and his girlfriend sitting in front of the TV. We took a drive around town and were amazed at how deserted the streets were. Gas stations on the other hand were packed with people buying gas. There were even police stationed at the gas stations apparently to keep things calm.

For the first time in my life there were no jet contrails overhead.

In the following weeks I noticed that all the small planes were flying low and slow past the tower at the local airport.

You’ve come to the right place for good links and honest opinion. Good luck with teaching your students what it feels like to have innocents attacked in the name of some “peaceful” religion.

Fox News ran an excellent 1 hr. memorial video (no commercial interruption) on 9-10 and again on 9-11. It went over events as they unfolded at each location.

I applaud you for educating your students on the tragedy of 9-11 through the use of actual footage, which is abundant.

I was away from home that day, too.

The next day, for the first time in my life, in my own country, I was lining up for almost two hours to stare at a manned and loaded 50 cal aimed at my car & me, concrete barriers, 3 levels of protection, .... and a whole ‘nuther world.

“It was a beautiful early Fall day — very clear. Strange to think it was nearly a decade ago”

It strikes me as odd that, that was the weather for most of the USA that entire week. Will never forget the eeriness of no planes in the sky for several days after

I never had to deal with that kind of security but things were very different even here in Michigan.

I think it was the police at gas stations that made it seem so real.

Thank you for what you are teaching.

Last night (9-10) there was a thread remembering 9-11-2001, and within that thread someone (Extremely Extreme Extremist if I remember correctly) posted a link to a FR thread from that horrible morning in 2001.

As you read through the thread, the postings go from “there’s been a plane crash” to the realization that we were now at war with terrorist islamics. It’s never difficult to remember that day, but to read a thread that started the instant the news of the first hit to the towers happened, is quite remarkable. One’s heart sinks reading the thread as they unfold into hundreds of postings by Americans who know their beloved America has been attacked.

I hope Extremely Extreme Extremist might see this an repost that link for you, naturalman1975.

God Bless and thanks again for teaching the truth to your students.

That is a particularly useful site. I first learned of it this morning and was watching the Fox coverage at about noon today. The coverage was taped from the Washington,DC Fox affiliate.

The first twenty minutes of the Fox DC coverage are pure fluff about some sort of singles cruse. Then the DC station did the first reports of the first crash.

Shortly after that they cut to the New York Fox station and carry their live coverage. The New York anchors interview several witnesses and are having an interesting interview with a man who saw the first aircraft fly down the Hudson River and hit the North tower.

He notes in his comments that the plane seemed to deliberately hit the tower. The anchors are interested, ask some good questions, and even the word “terrorism” comes up. Then, as if on cue, the second aircraft hits the South tower, erasing all doubt.

The one thing I noticed as well was the lack of air traffic that day. I live under the approach to one of the busiest airports in North America, and I’m so accustomed to the overhead traffic that I missed it that day.

The other thing that brought it home was the memo at the flight school where I was renting planes. Because we’re near the border, it was not uncommon for newbies to stray into US airspace. When I rented a plane a few days after 9/11 (our airspace had just re-opened, US airspace was still closed) we were shown a letter from NORAD warning us that we’d get shot down if we entered US airspace. Really puts a damper on a sightseeing flight to Niagara Falls.

I’ll never forget how blue the sky was that day out here in Northeast. I don’t think I ever saw such a bluer color to the sky before or since. It make the colors of the fire and smoke that much more stark and horrible.

I just finished wathching “United 93” that was aired tonight by the CBC. Another excellent film, though not what you’re looking for, was also an eye-opener. It’s a French-language docudrama, “Dans les Tour Jumelles” that aired last week. You could probably find either at cbc.ca. DISCLAIMER: 99% of CBC content is pure BS but they are like the proverbial stopped clock.

I should add that the strongest aspect of “Unitied 93” was the depiction of the confusion at the military and the FAA. In both cases, their primary source of intel during that day was CNN.
