Antibiotics mess up your stomach, U.S. study finds

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Even seemingly gentle antibiotics may severely disrupt the balance of microbes living in the gut, with unforeseen health consequences, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

An intimate study of three women given ciprofloxacin showed the drug suppressed entire populations of beneficial bacteria, and at least one woman took months to recover.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, supports the common wisdom that antibiotics can damage the "good" germs living in the body.

It may also support the idea behind the development of so-called probiotic products including yogurt with live cultures of bacteria.

All of the cyclines eat my stomach alive. On the other hand, in dogs at least, doxy is the ONLY thing that will kill the tick borne disease like erlichia, and it’s a long time they have to take it, like 3 weeks I think.

i figured this out myself years ago. If I need antibiotics for a sinus infection, 3 days later I’ve got horrible horrible diarrhea. It’s a struggle to make it to the last pill. sometimes I don’t make it, and throw them out.

It is really nothing new. It has been known that antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your gut for years, hence the common problem of diarrhea after taking them. Yogurt and pro-biotic supplements are a good cure.

Also, buttermilk is a great natural cure for a vaginal yeast infection. My wife informs me that the buttermilk is also very soothing.

I now take Oregano Oil or Thieves Oil for serious sore throats, and it's worked each time (so far) ...

I've learned/taken Oregano Oil about 15 yrs ago. Helped with bronchitis. I always keep it in the house - good for many things. Recently, I learned of Thieves Oil but didn't purchase any, yet. So thanks for the reminder.

Aspirin? For strep? There’s a five-day course of antibiotics that’ll knock that strep right out. Why be contagious for longer than necessary?

LOL.

Tony Bourdain “No Reservations” was chatting along
in his show and said “look that man is carrying
more crabs then the crew of Jersey Shore has”.

Generic doxycycline is ineffective against acne (speaking from experience). Fortunately, I’m now using Retin-A, and the initial results are good. Maybe I won’t need superbug-inducing antibiotics just to meet women after all. :-)

So with the buttermilk.

Drink it or soak in it, cold?

My kids just take a pro-biotic with their anti-biotics as soon as they get put on the them. Once we started doing that, no more stomach problems with anti-biotics.

I found that to be true with the sons nuero damage.

Really makes all his CP issues go nuts and add the runs for months.

We really work hard at doing all preventive care and only antibiotics when all else has failed.

I’ve heard many times about my mother’s older sister. She was an eight year old girl, so excited that my Grandma was pregnant, because she just knew she was going to get the baby sister she’d always wanted.

Because of strep throat, she died before her baby sister—my mother—was born.

That was in 1940, and my family STILL talks about her.

Warm it to body temp in a pan of warm water and douche with it. Make sure the buttermilk is cultured buttermilk because it is the natural bacteria that restores the balance in the vagina.

“Generic doxycycline is ineffective against acne”

I have not heard of antibiotics being used for acne, but my last acne was about 50 years ago, haha.
I will have to ask my brother...oh, he is a dermatologist.:)

I have taken antibiotics a number of times in my life, but this was my first experience with doxycycline.

Not to worry, Obamacare will give unemployed American hippies “green jobs” giving probiotic enemas to people suffering these symptoms.

P.S. A friend of my wife had a yeast infection so severe she was hospitalized. After they tried every anti-fungal known, someone mentioned the buttermilk douche. It worked.

I’ve taken a number of antibiotics for my condition. They work...on the bacteria, while leaving the root cause of acne (oil plugs) untouched. The Retin-A, it seems, appears to be helping to eliminate the oil plugs, so that the pimples don’t form in the first place. So I’ll give my current dermatologist a thumbs up over my other two.
