Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut

Posted on 09/30/2010 4:42:39 PM PDT by EveningStar

For those of you who have seen both versions, which version do you prefer - the Lester cut or the Donner cut - and why?

From Wikipedia:

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut is a 2006 re-edit of the 1980 superhero film, Superman II, by Richard Donner, who shot a large part of the original movie before being replaced as director by Richard Lester. It stars Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Terence Stamp, Margot Kidder and Marlon Brando. The cut was supervised by Donner, creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz (who penned the 1977 shooting script for Superman II, on which the Donner cut is based), and Michael Thau, an editor who worked with Donner on the 2001 DVD director's cut and restoration of the 1978 film Superman.

I prefer Superman III - that scene with Clark Kent vs Superman in that junkyard is classic!

Donner cut by far ... it’s a shame it wasn’t released like that back then.

Lester Lester Lester.

Richard L. is a terrific and underrated filmmaker who made a very moving matinee film with Superman 2. Richard Donner is a hack who made a piece of faceless glop with the original film.

Was that in the original Puzo screenplay or did Donner add that? That was one of the major weak points of the first movie for me.

It was meant to be at the end of the 2nd film to finish off the story told across both films. When they ran out of time and money they decided to stick it in the first film.

Richard Lester version.

Both have their pros/cons, good points and flaws, but the Lester version pulled everything together in a much neater and more consistent manner.

At the least, in the Lester version the a**hole trucker and diner patrons REMEMBER Clark Kent when he shows back up and kicks the trucker’s a**.

As a plot device to allow the stereotypical Superman superhero conflict (two major situations to resolve, one involving Lois Lane's saftey, but only enough time to resolve one) to be resolved, I'd agree that the time-travel device was weak.

However, as a way of showing the resolution of the inner conflict between Clark Kent and Kal El (which was foreshadowed early in the movie by the scene where teenage Clark Kent, the football team's towelboy, punts the football into the stratosphere) - with the Clark side winning by setting aside Jor El's philosophy of limited interference in human affairs - it worked out very, very well.

I remember reading that. It’s still dumb. He was supposed to have super powers, not divine powers. :)

All I know is never ask for the Donner cut at the Donner party.

Neither. After the first “Superman,” they sucked. Except for “Superman Returns”—I thought that movie was great.

The original Superman was the first “date” movie i ever went to.
I was around 11 years old.

Still, i Like Chris Reeve now but didn’t then and Margot Kidder always grossed me out.
She reminded me of this alcoholic retch that lived in my neighborhood.
Soooooo, yea, i never really liked the Superman movies.

I saw the recent one a few years ago while vacationing in Vermont.
It was pretty good, I liked it. The Movie theater was better though, La-Z boy like seats and booze was served.
Pretty sweet!

Interesting timing. I have the 4 DVD set. Watched them all in past 10 days.

I had a BIG crush on Christopher Reeve. Wore out the old VSH videos on the superman & Somewhere in time

will ping list. A bit discouraged, recently some things I have posted (including a thread this morning on Tony Curtis) have been pulled.

Am I really that naughty?

Thanks for ping sweetie
