Kai Milla's eponymous clothing line has shut down, and the cash-strapped business has failed to pay vendors for months, sources claim.
Milla, wife of Stevie Wonder, founded the women's contemporary line in 2005 and received acclaim from the fashion press, including a spread in Harper's Bazaar and an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."
Milla's height of popularity came after First Lady Michelle Obama wore a green silk sleeveless dress by the designer in February 2009, when Wonder was awarded a Gershwin Prize from the Library of Congress and gave a performance at the White House.
Milla's last collection was for spring/summer 2010, and was presented during New York Fashion Week last September at the Museum of Art and Design at Columbus Circle. A source told Page Six the line was discontinued earlier this year.
"The company has left many creditors coming after her to be paid for time, service, and materials," the source said. "Modeling agencies, production crews, design assistants, pattern makers, office and store landlords have all been trying to contact her office in Los Angeles and New York for months for payment."

Crazy Aunt Esther will go on the warpath..
More accurate to say Michelle Obama finished her off.
Click on the article. That’s the designer, aka Mrs. Stevie Wonder in the photo.
What would happen if Stevie suddenly regained his eyesight?
couldn’t see her way out of this mess?
I smell bailout in the making.
Just because you like clothes and wear clothes and call yourself a “designer” doesn’t mean people will buy your clothes and pay your bills.
After all, the Williams sisters are now “designers” and P Diddy as well or as bad.
They all seemed to have bypassed design school on their way to fame and fortune in the “designer” clothing business.
“Milla’s height of popularity came after First Lady Michelle Obama wore a green silk sleeveless dress by the designer in February 2009”
I will say that dress was one of the nicer outfits Michelle Obama has worn. Better than that red-and-black getup that made her look like a black widow spider, anyway.
Which one designed Michelle's wardrobe?
Gud one. Is funny.
Doesnt matter...I think both of them at first thought Me-chelle was a man.
“Just because you like clothes and wear clothes and call yourself a designer doesnt mean people will buy your clothes and pay your bills.”
Guess they went high on the hog, expecting more of Obamie’s stash.
The collar needs to be about a foot higher...
Wow! That was just after Ubama entered the Whitey House. After the country got to see her "designs" for the first time, it was all downhill after that! Talk about the kiss of death!
Milla's popularity is tracking that of Ubama.
Isn’t this the 2nd designer for her that’s gone belly up?
Cash-strapped business has failed. Will she send Obama a thank you card?.
"I got an idea idea idea"
I think you are correct.
IIRC Michelle had an Asian designer at one time.
Think she was the one that wrapped the First Lady in upholstery fabric.
Says a lot, doesn't it?
I just called to say you owe me ...
Moochele Obama is to fashion designers as Barkey Obama is to Democrat candidates. Everyone loved the attention in 08 but now they leave town when AF1 is calling into the landing pattern.
Isn't this just typical!?
Guess she is waiting for Zero to pay her bills.
Or, maybe Michelle did not pay for the clothes that Mrs. Wonder made for her.
She looks like the result if Michael Jackson decided to become a woman rather than white.
So now, this dressmaker gone bust, another victim of the free enterprise system, shunned by those who vote with their dollars, will be branded a capitalist by her client’s husband, and yes, of ocurse, stand in line for the promised, possibly whispered in private, bailout, that she so does not deserve!
Welcome to being an enterprenuer, in the age of Obama!
Guess giving Moochelle the dress didn’t really pay off
Where, oh where, will Michelle find ugly stuff to wear? I know... one of the prizes on “Runway” will be to make an especially avant-garde outfit, or better yet, collection for the First, er, Lady.
She looks like she belongs in one of those ice age exhibits in a Museum of Natural History.
Ok, I didn’t need to see her that big.......LOL!!!
WHY the HELL doesn’t her husband, Stevie Wonder PAY THE LITTLE PEOPLE?????? Liberals...they are ALL THE SAME...DEAD BEATS!
Milla, wife of Stevie Wonder,
“Which one designed Michelle’s wardrobe?”
Photo of designer says.. GUILTY
Mrs BO in red plaid dress appears ready to kick out in an Irish step dance.
Does that mean no more boob belts?
You Haven't Done Nothin'
If You Really Love Me
I Ain't Gonna Stand For It
Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer
Have A Talk With God
Heaven Help Us All
WHY??? WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO US????
Does this woman not own any pantyhose? I do not think I’ve ever seen her with stockings on.
Yes. Maria Pinto filed bankruptcy earlier this year. Both of these designers also had Oprah Winfrey as a client.
Stacy on What Not to Wear pretty much outlawed panty hose. I like the show and generally like the coaching that she and Clinton do but have gone back to wearing panty hose. Just too many good reasons to do so. Its fun to have that conversation with other women while men are around. LOL
I didn’t know hookers and Michelle needed designers to look that bad. Who knew?
I can’t get over that ugly shirt.
Wait now I am confused.
I thought that fat white chick was the crappy clothes designer for Shelly.
That can’t be Stevie Wonders wife.
So MO has more than one crappy clothes designer?
Good grief! With that butt ugly, America hating, fat ass pig as your leading model, how could anyone expect success.
She got the surprise of her life when she received payment in the form of collard and turnip greens from Michelle's garden ;-)
Isn’t she Lovely, Isn’t she beau ti ful...
Well now we all know who created the boob belt.
