Musical Brainsstorm Help Requested: Need Examples of Saxophone (Vanity)
N/A ^ | 10/3/2010 | N/A

Greetings, fellow Freepers...my 10 year-old has recently taken up a musical instrument, the saxophone. She's interested, and although there's an obviously long road ahead, I was hoping to collect some examples of the saxophone to get her some additional exposure to the sound.

Looking for musically-inclined to assist with a brain-storming list. Obviously, I'd like to hear examples of jazz or blues, but I'd like to include rock, pop, and even orchestral genres as well. What songs or artists would you suggest as a good example of saxophone play?

Yeah - if you search around on the net you will find it, the other players confirmed it. The session players they used are fantastic. Steve Gadd supposedly read the chart, put on the headphones, played the track and was done in one take. I can think of a dozen great drummers but this track is one of the best.

I doubt anyone on a Steeley Dan track did anything in one take.

From the Rock and Pop arena:

Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF5dtePX5Jk

Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ksa4VjKE3RY

Glenn Frey - I found Somebody - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v2GtfhSGjE

Glenn Frey - You Belong to the City - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4ueaD22hg8

You might also look at some of bands that were part of the “Swing Revival” scene of the late 1990’s (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, etc) or the various ska bands out there. Some of those tunes have themes or lyrics that might not be appropriate for a 10 year old, though.

Hope this helps a bit!

In the Rock genre, some Supertramp and Pink Floyd songs use a saxophone to nice effect.

Lester Young's Kansas City Sessions are very accessible, with his marvelous saxophone playing standing out nicely in a small group session. And Mingus Ah Um by Charles Mingus features a lot of enjoyable saxophone by Booker Ervin at his best. Lastly, anything by Stan Getz, especially Getz/Gilberto showcases his beautiful, intelligent playing.

For tenor, Coleman Hawkins:

For alto, Richie Cole:

(takes about a minute and a half to get going)

And this classic from Woody Herman’s Second Herd by Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff, Herbie Steward, and Stan Getz:

sigh...I could listen to this stuff all day long.

You know, it’s the supporting musicians who impress me the most on my all-time favorite Steely Dan videos: the live stuff from 2006. I think they were recorded in Charlotte NC. The two guitarists are breathtaking. I’m still trying to get my guitarist-friend to tell me the exact make of the instruments they’re playing. I can’t track down the videos in question at the moment because I’m walking out the door. If any guitar virtuosos read this and want to help me out, I’ll try to check back in later.

Is it an alto or a tenor sax?

She's starting out on an alto sax, as it's a little smaller for her size and handling.

This isnt a sax tune. This was done with syth, but brass could be used effectively to do the elephant parts.

I will include it as to possibilities. Nelly The Elephant

Check out Candy Dulfer. She was 18 years old when she played “Lili was Here”, a duet with Dave Stewart that became a cross-over pop hit. Her website features a sax education page:

Artist recordings are fine but are a fantasy at this age. This is what she’ll be playing in a few years at school.
